Could Violent Video Games Get Taxed?

Could Violent Video Games Get Taxed?

None

Is it fair to tax games due to their content? William Fourkiller, Oklahoma State Representative, thinks so. He has proposed a new law placing a one percent tax on any game rated Teen or above by the ESRB. The money raised by this new law would go toward programs that would help prevent bullying and childhood obesity.

“Violent video games contribute to some of our societal problems like obesity and bullying, but because they raise a lot of revenue, they can also provide part of the solution,” Fourkiller said. So it appears he, like many other people, is vilifying video games as a longstanding social problem.

The small tax would only add 50-60 cents to each game purchase. While that isn’t much for us gamers, it adds up when you total all game sales. Regardless of the proposed law’s efficacy in raising money, do you think it is fair to single out violent video games like this?
