Crackdown 2 Dev Reveals Co-op Shooter “Hollowpoint”

Revealed at this year’s Gamescom on Tuesday, August 12, Scottish developer Ruffian Games, the studio behind Crackdown 2 , has announced its new cooperative shooter for Sony’s PlayStation 4, entitled “ Hollowpoint ”.

The studio’s creative director Billy Thomson took to PlayStation.Blog to further discuss what players can expect from Ruffian Games’ new title.

Hollowpoint is touted to be a “ highly tactical, four player cooperative action game” , and it also features a curious blend of both 2D and 3D gameplay; you’ll experience fast-paced 2D platform gameplay and precision-based 3D gameplay.

In the world of Hollowpoint , Mega Corporations engage each other in corporate warfare, and the way the go about it is by hiring Organizations, which is what you’ll be play as.

Each Organization contains Operatives (you), who are described as the mercenaries of the 22nd century, and they all have differents types of Ability, Weapons, Equipment and Powerups needed to complete assigned missions from Mega Corporations.

In order to improve your Organization, you must complete said assigned missions to earn XP and Credits, both of which are essential. You can complete missions on your own, but teammates will be needed if you want to go for the more dangerous and more lucrative missions–sometimes even buddying up with a rival Organization.

Naturally, earning XP levels up your Operative, which awards you with Skill Points to put into upgrading your Abilities. These abilities are structured as a tech tree, whith different branches reaching out to different Ability types.

However, this tech tree has a limit as to how many skill points you can use, and it is touted that this restriction results “ in a deep upgrade system that allows you to create a squad of Archetype Operatives who are upgraded to focus on different types of Ability – giving you more tactical options during a Mission.

Credits can be used to purchase commodities called “Asset Packs” from the in-game Market, which are described to contain everything from “ new Operatives, Weapons, Equipment and Powerups, as well as the Upgrades that can be applied to them. ” These packs are in different compositions, with some being focused on a specific Asset, and others being a mix of everything. What’s more is that the more you spend on an Asset Pack the more you get from it.

Lastly, Hollowpoint’s environments are procedurally generated, which is touted that every time you enter a mission you’ll experience new environmental layout, along with new objective combinations–all to so that the game “ constantly feels fresh and varied ”.
