Dear Esther Coming to PS4, Xbox One

Dear Esther Coming to PS4, Xbox One

I don’t think any of you will be as excited as I am to hear this news, but here it is anyway: Dear Esther is coming to PS4 and Xbox One! If that sentence doesn’t mean anything to you, let me fill you in. Dear Esther was re-released in 2012 (it was originally a free source engine mod) on Steam, and quickly amassed a passionate cult following due to its incredible visuals, strong voice acting, and ambiguous plot. It was also the first majorly popular “walking simulator,” and has sparked many debates about whether these experiences truly count as games, or are something less-than.

No matter how you define Dear Esther , it is, in my opinion, an experience that should be had by all. Since its release, many games have emulated, imitated, or iterated upon its execution and style, but Dear Esther still holds up after all these years. Of course, if you enjoyed Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, you’re already familiar with The Chinese Room and its storytelling acumen.

Be warned: Dear Esther is mysterious. It doesn’t spoon-feed you the story or hold your hand from point-A to point-B. You have to investigate and piece together scraps of information and form the story for yourself, but if you do, you’ll be handsomely rewarded. I wrote a 12,000 word essay about this game after I finished it, and I still think about what the game meant sometimes. There’s no official release date as of yet, but I’ll definitely let you guys know when I get an update.
