Developer Remedy Explains The Dual-Media Approach Of Quantum Break

Even before the Xbox One’s avid obsession with television support, gaming had already begun to trend towards other media sectors. Just look at Defiance , a sci-fi MMORPG on current-gen consoles that is paired with its own Syfy network series that (loosely) coincides with the game’s events. Then there’s former THQ VP Danny Bilson’s recently announced horror game , to be released in segments alongside a film series.

The next generation of systems is clearly in support of dual media, and Remedy’s newest title Quantum Break , set to release exclusively on the Xbox One, is currently leading the charge. As director Sam Lake explained, “There is a top-of-the-line action TV show that ships with the game. Both the game and the show are meant to be consumed together. Episodes of the show interweave with the game.”

This brings Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead to mind. Presumably anticipating the comparison, Lake quickly clarified that, although players will be able to tailor the story to some degree, Quantum Break will never be a “choose your own adventure” storyline. Elaborating on this, Lake explained that “Your junction choices in the game are a big part of how your custom experience in the game shapes up and how your director’s cut of the show turns out.”

“Director’s cut,” it seems, is the term given to story variations created by player choice. The label implies that the game’s story will holistically be the same, but still allow players a measure of choice.
