The Devil May Cry HD Collection is Capcom’s compilation containing the first three Devil May Cry games for the PlayStation 2. Initially released on March 22, 2012, for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the title has since been ported to PC and 8th-generation consoles (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch). This collection is a pure compilation and HD upscale of the original PS2 versions of each game and not a remaster or remake. Both Devil May Cry and Devil May Cry 3 are considered to be two of the more important titles in the development and evolution of the Character Action subgenre of action games.
Devil May Cry HD Collection Premise

The three games in the Devil May Cry HD Collection are the initial trilogy of titles in the series, with Devil May Cry introducing the character of Dante and exploring his lineage as the son of the Legendary Dark Knight Sparda. Devil May Cry 2 picks up just a few months later as Dante and fellow demon hunter Lucia are drawn to a mysterious artifact that another powerful enemy seeks to use to resurrect an ancient demon. The final game in the collection and the last series entry on the PS2, Devil May Cry 3 takes players back to a prequel tale showcasing how Dante came to be a demon hunter and attempted to stop his brother, Virgil, from opening a portal to the demon world.
Each of the three Devil May Cry titles in the HD Collection is a character action game where players control a single hero. Each game is split up into Missions where players can traverse self-contained spaces and fight enemies while also completing some light puzzle-solving and platforming challenges. Combat is the star of the show in each game, with players needing to leverage fighting game-style button inputs and a varying arsenal of melee and ranged weapons to deal combo attacks to enemies and rack up style points, earning rankings for their performance after each encounter and then a summary ranking at the end of each mission. The HD Collection versions of each game maintain the same core gameplay as the PS2 originals but update the visuals for HD displays and up-res textures.
Devil May Cry HD Collection Main Characters

©Devil May Cry HD Collection gameplay screenshot – Original
The main character and face of the Devil May Cry franchise is Dante, the super-stylish and carefree demon hunter who, coincidentally, is also the son of a demon. After introducing players to the character in the first Devil May Cry, Dante would go on to have several other adventures as the focal point of the series until Devil May Cry 4‘s change in protagonist. That said, the Devil May Cry HD Collection contains the series’ initial trilogy of games on the PS2, which focus squarely on Dante and his adventures past and present. Main characters in Devil May Cry include:
- Dante: Dante is the main character of the Devil May Cry franchise. A demon hunter with a carefree demeanor and a penchant for cracking jokes, his attitude belies his skill with a blade and his signature twin pistols, Ebony and Ivory.
- Lucia: Lucia is one of the two playable heroes in Devil May Cry 2. Her mother and Dante’s father, Sparda, were allies in the past fighting against demonkind.
- Virgil: Virigl is Dante’s brother and a skilled warrior in his own right. After initially fighting against Dante, the two become allies and he is a playable character in DMC3.
- Sparda: The Legendary Dark Knight Sparda is Dante’s father and an important figure in the Devil May Cry lore. His affection for humanity prompted him to turn his back on his fellow demons.
Games in the Devil May Cry Series
Capcom’s Devil May Cry series is commonly understood as the progenitor of the Character Action subgenre, helping to give way to an entire subset of action games with complex, fighting game-style inputs and an emphasis on player skill expression. Following the initial trilogy of titles on the PS2, a fourth game in the series would arrive 3 years later for 7th-generation consoles and PC. Following a soft reboot/prequel of the series a few years later that received a bit of a mixed response, Capcom returned with Devil May Cry 5 in 2019, which many fans consider to be the series’ pinnacle outside of the much-loved Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening. Games in the Devil May Cry series include:
- Devil May Cry (PlayStation 2, 2001)
- Devil May Cry 2 (PlayStation 2, 2003)
- Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (PlayStation 2, 2005)
- Devil May Cry 4 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, 2008)
- DmC: Devil May Cry (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, 2013)
- Devil May Cry HD Collection (PC, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, 2018)
- Devil May Cry 5 (PC, PS4/PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, 2019)

Secret Mission Locations
Just like in the original Devil May Cry, Devil May Cry 2 has several Secret Missions hidden within many of the normal Missions.
- Mission 1: Head inside the doors just to the right of the pillars where the Puia (Harpy-like enemies) appear in Mission 1. Continue through the level until you reach a wall with a face on it. Interact with this wall to enter a hidden area.
- Mission 2: There are two hidden areas in Mission 2, both of which players will access the same way. In the rooms full of coffins, check each one to discover both hidden areas.
- Mission 3: Either before or after riding the cargo elevator, you should come to a door positioned near two other doors with a small set of steps in front. Stand before the door on the left and press Circle to enter a hidden area.
- Mission 4: Just after starting the mission, head to the first door on your left. The door itself is not very noticeable except for it sticking out slightly. Approach the door and interact with it to enter a hidden area.
- Mission 7: Just before heading to the roof to complete the mission, interact with the door to the left to enter a hidden area.
- Mission 10: After defeating the giant butterfly and its larvae, you will descend a set of stairs. After the game loads, go to the first set of doors you see and interact with them to enter another hidden area.
- Mission 16: After acquiring Sacrilege, jump down from the balcony where the item was located. There will be a wall that resembles a door — interact with this wall to access another hidden area.

Devil May Cry HD Collection Cheat FAQs
How do you unlock everything in Devil May Cry 3?
There is a temporary code that allows players to unlock all Modes and Costumes/Characters in Devil May Cry 3 that still works in the Devil May Cry HD Collection. Players will need to enter this code from DMC3‘s title screen and it requires some dexterity to pull off. The code itself is R1 + R2 + L1 + L2 + Up/Left on D-Pad + Left Analog Stick Down/Right (or the corresponding equivalent for Switch and Xbox controllers), though some reports suggest that the left analog stick needs to be slowly rotated until you hear the Devil Trigger sound effect signifying that it worked. Note that using this code disables the ability to save or earn achievements/trophies.
How do you unlock Virgil in Devil May Cry HD Collection?
Virgil, Dante’s brother, is an unlockable character that players can use in Devil May Cry 3. To unlock him, you need to either enter the code that temporarily unlocks everything or simply beat the game on Normal mode using Dante.
Which is the best game in the Devil May Cry HD Collection?
Choosing the “best” game from the initial trilogy of Devil May Cry titles is, for the most part, subjective, but there’s a strong case to be made for Devil May Cry 3 being the best title in the series. In addition to its important enhancements to the story and gameplay, Devil May Cry 3 features some of the most robust combat in the series and a steep, yet fair, challenge. It’s also worth noting that Devil May Cry 3 has the highest review aggregate score of the first three games in the series.
How long to beat Devil May Cry HD Collection?
As a compilation, Devil May Cry HD Collection contains three separate games for players to complete. However, each of these three games can be beaten in just a few hours, with some variance based on player skill and the selected difficulty mode. For most players, completing all three Devil May Cry games in the HD Collection will take roughly 30 hours.
