Diablo III: A Cautionary Tale

Diablo III: A Cautionary Tale

Gaming addiction is a real thing. Cheat Code Central writer Robert VerBruggen has gone into detail on the fact . MMOs are cited as a particularly poignant case, given their added incentive to keep players hooked on a monthly subscription cycle—dole out rewards slowly, provide new stimulus in response to the same repeated actions.

Blizzard games, perhaps due to their immense popularity, have a tendency to become a firebrand for those who rail against gaming addiction, holding titles such as World of Warcraft and Starcraft II up as examples of games that can suck a player dry.

Last weekend, Russell Shirley passed away at the young age of 32. He reportedly suffered a heart attack after an extended, multi-day session of Diablo III and was discovered by his landlord when his friends called her, worried that he hadn’t shown up to work or contacted them in days.

This could easily become a sermon about the dangers of playing addictive games, but, while that is certainly something that every gamer should be aware of, it is hardly the sole factor. Shirley’s lifestyle included other choices that impacted his health, from eating habits to a lack of exercise. It takes a conglomeration of factors like this, not any one, and so we would like to urge all gamers out there to play smart. Take breaks, eat right, hydrate, sleep when you need to and find some sort of physical activity that you enjoy doing.

The games will still be there when you get back.
