E3 2016: Razer HDK 2 to Compete With Rift and Vive

E3 2016: Razer HDK 2 to Compete With Rift and Vive

It’s looking like everybody wants a piece of that sweet, sweet VR pie at E3 this year. Bethesda is making DOOM and Fallout 4 available in VR. We’re sure to see a bunch of VR titles at tonight’s Sony conference. And Razer has announced that it wants to take on Oculus and HTC with its upcoming Hacker Development Kit 2 virtual reality headset. Previously, Razer’s HDK kits were aimed mainly at developers, but the peripheral maker wants to entice consumers with this new kit, which has similar specs to the current industry leaders.

The big news about the HDK 2 is that it will be selling for $400, which is considerably less than the $600 Oculus Rift and $800 HTC Vive. It does not, however, come with headphones or a controller. Still, it’s a nice budget option for gamers who aren’t interested in PlayStation VR.

The other big news is that the HDK 2 supports open-source development. I think it’s a great thing that some companies are fighting back against the exclusivity that seems to be creeping into VR, especially with Oculus’ policies. We don’t need a second layer of exclusive hardware on top of our main PCs or consoles, thank you!
