Kingdom Come: Deliverance is the historically accurate RPG from developer Warhorse Studios and published by Deep Silver. In addition to its notoriety for attempting to immerse players in a realistic medieval life simulation, the game is one of the few examples of a Kickstarter project going on to secure a publisher after beginning as an indie project. Surprisingly, the game secured over $2 million in funding before Deep Silver picked up the title for release.
Kingdom Come‘s development can be traced back to 2009 when lead developer Daniel Vavra left 2K Czech and began seeking independent investors for his idea of a historically accurate RPG. After failing to get major investors from the Czech Republic successfully, the project turned to Kickstarter. It was on the popular crowd-funding platform that the game would see massive support from interested fans. The successful campaign raised just $1 million shy of the game’s proposed $3 million budget. The successful Kickstarter campaign proved to game publishers that there was an audience for the title, helping to secure Deep Silver to publish Kingdom Come for PC and consoles.
Widely regarded as one of the most ambitious RPGs in many years, reviews for Kingdom Come are mostly positive. While the PC version holds a favorable score of 76% on review aggregate site Metacritic, the console versions haven’t fared as well. Many reviewers note the persistence of bugs and glitches in the console versions, which struggle to keep up with the game’s processing demands. That said, the title does maintain a strong cult following thanks to its historical accuracy and punishing difficulty.
Kingdom Come: Deliverance Premise

Taking place in the early 15th Century in the Kingdom of Bohemia, Kingdom Come: Deliverance positions players as Henry. Henry is a young blacksmith’s apprentice studying under his father Martin. Henry and Martin are commissioned with the forging of a sword for King Wenceslaus’ hetman Sir Radzig Kobyla. When Sir Radzig visits the town to inspect the weapon, an army of invading Cuman soldiers descend into the town. In the ensuing battle, Henry’s parents lose their lives, which sets Henry off on his quest. Henry enters the service of Sir Hanush as his squire and aims to get revenge for his parents.
Gameplay-wise, Kingdom Come: Deliverance is a first-person action role-playing game set in an open world. While the general appearance of the game is similar to the Elder Scrolls series, the gameplay is much more realistic and nuanced. Players do not choose a typical RPG class but instead, begin as a blank slate. Through completing actions and different tasks, players gain experience in specific skills. As a result of this use-based skill progression system, players’ “class” is instead determined by their play style. Dialogue trees and conversations play a major role in both story and character progression. Players are often presented with options during dialogue to make quick decisions on how to respond within a limited window. These choices then impact how those characters and others perceive the player.
The game incorporates some light survival mechanics and several mini-games for activities often automated in other RPGs. Players must sleep to remain well-rested as well as eat to stay healthy. Additionally, acts such as picking locks, making medicines, and repairing gear are all done in-game by the player instead of being automated. Players can use ranged or melee weapons in combat, and the game features a startlingly realistic physics system that factors in the weight of weapons in their effectiveness.
