Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Cheats & Cheat Codes for SNES, Genesis, Sega CD & More

The history of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers video game is a surprisingly complicated one. Much like the greater Power Rangers franchise itself encompasses several different series, the video game title also applies to five different games. Each of the five games is an adaptation of the first season of the original TV show, which is also the first entry in the now-iconic Power Rangers franchise. The games each take a different approach to adapting the events of the show, and while Bandai published all of them, they were made by different developers, for different consoles, and they even represented different gameplay genres. From side-scrolling action games to fighting games to FMV titles, there’s as much variety to be found in the video game line based on the original series as there is in the TV franchise itself.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Premise

The five identically named games are all based on the first season of the original TV show. In all five games, you control the original five members of the Power Ranger team as they battle the minions of the evil Rita Repulsa. How the team goes about their mission differs greatly depending on which game you’re playing, however. The Super NES version, developed by Natsume, is a side-scrolling action game with beat ‘em up elements, similar to classics like Final Fight 3. The Game Boy version, made by Tom Create, uses a similar gameplay style, albeit a much more simplified one. Both games let you freely choose any of the five original Power Rangers.

The Genesis version, developed by Nova, takes a much different approach. This game is a 1v1 fighting game. In the story-based scenario mode, players confront CPU opponents on foot before challenging their giant monster forms in the series’ iconic Megazord. In true fighting game fashion, there is also a battle mode for two players to go head to head. The Game Gear version, created by Sims, uses a similar setup but features more enemies and levels for fans to take on. Then there’s the Sega CD version, which is wildly different from all of its fellows. This game is a full-motion video experience, using live-action film footage to have players take part in the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers experience firsthand. Gameplay in this version revolves primarily around responding to quick-time events.

The main characters of all five versions of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers game are, unsurprisingly enough, the Power Rangers themselves. Here is a full description of the iconic hero team and what you can expect from each character in their video game adventures.

  • Jason Lee Scott: The leader of the team is the Red Ranger, alias Jason Scott. He wields the mighty Power Sword in battle. He can also pilot the Tyrannosaurus Dinozord. As an accomplished martial artist, Jason has a bit of a competitive streak, which can get him in trouble sometimes.
  • Zack Taylor: The Black Ranger Zack Taylor wields the Power Axe and holds the Mastodon Power Coin, allowing him to summon and pilot the Mastodon Dinozord. Zack is a quick-witted and athletic young man who loves music and is an incorrigible romantic.
  • Trini Kwan: Kung fu artist Trini Kwan is the Yellow Ranger. She uses Power Daggers in combat and controls the Sabertooth Tiger Dinozord. She is a generally soft spoken person, but is also a passionate environmentalist.
  • Kimberly Hart: The Pink Ranger is depicted as a stereotypical valley girl, but her love and affection for her friends constantly wins out over any shallowness she may express. She uses the Power Bow and pilots the Pterodactyl Dinozord.
  • Billy Cranston: The Blue Ranger is a stereotypical nerd, but his quiet demeanor belies his prowess in combat. He wields the Power Lance and the Triceratops Dinozord.
  • Tommy Oliver: Tommy Oliver begins his Power Ranger journey as an antagonist, having been brainwashed by the evil Rita Repulsa to act against his classmates as the sinister Green Ranger. Once freed of the sorceress’s evil control, Tommy joins the team and becomes one of its strongest members. He uses the Dragon Dagger and pilots the legendary Dragonzord.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Cheats FAQ

When did Mighty Morphin Power Rangers end? The very first Power Rangers series outlasted its first five video games by only about a year. The final episode aired on November 27, 1995. A new miniseries called Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers picked up the slack in February 1996, and paved the way for the new series, Power Rangers Zeo, which kicked off on April 20, 1996.

Are they remaking Mighty Morphin Power Rangers? The greater Power Rangers franchise has had many iterations since the original series in the ’90s, but many nostalgic fans will always prefer how things were at the very beginning. Luckily for those fans, 2023 saw the release of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always. This special TV movie reunites the original cast to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original show. Additionally, fans can reserve copies of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Return, a comic book reboot of the original series written by Amy Jo Johnson, who played the Pink Ranger in the original show.
