EA Sells 1.4 Million Copies of Madden In The First Week

EA Sells 1.4 Million Copies of Madden In The First Week

None

Gaming sales have been slowly creeping back up after enduring a 26% drop in July. This is due, in large part, to a number of hotly anticipated sequels. And very few sequels are more popular than those produced by the Madden franchise. Well, today the folks at EA are showing off their sales numbers for Madden NFL 12’s first week on store shelves.

So far, EA has persuaded 1.4 million people to exchange their hard-earned American dollars for virtual NFL superstardom. The revenue generated from NFL 12 is up 10 over the previous version, which was already up 5 percent from NFL 10.

But from EA’s perspective, these numbers may not be as illustrious as we might have thought. For instance, NFL 10 sold 1.9 million copies in its first week, which is 26 percent fewer than the current incarnation. However, digital sales made up a large part of Madden 12’s revenue last week, and those numbers are up 78 percent over the previous title. This means that EA may be selling fewer copies, but they’re making more money overall.

Even if EA isn’t entirely happy with these sales numbers, they do represent an encouraging upswing in a fairly shaky economy.
