EA’s Origin Service Has Over 5 Million Users

EA’s Origin Service Has Over 5 Million Users

None

EA is busy patting themselves on the back after releasing their subscription numbers to the public. Their Origin service has been steadily collecting members since its launch in June. And last month, the developer announced that they had surpassed 4 million daily users. Well, now EA reports that they’ve added another million users since we last checked in, crossing the 5 million mark this week.

In a recent interview with Digital Life, EA’s Peter Moore discussed Origin’s relationship with gamers:

“I think in its broadest sense they think it is just EA’s answer to Steam, and it is much more than that. Like any great content provider, you want to provide yourself with a platform to talk directly with your customers,” he said. “You don’t necessarily want to be constantly be disintermediated by the other platform holder. We love our business with Microsoft and Sony and Nintendo and with Apple and Facebook, all of which have platforms that we develop games on, and all of which have revenue sharing situations or royalties, but at the same time we love to be able to talk directly with our consumers and build a platform that other publishers can take advantage of.”

So far, Origin isn’t much more than a way for EA to release games without having to deal with Steam, but as the service’s membership continues to grow, perhaps that will change. After all, a little friendly competition is usually a very good thing.
