Elder Scrolls Online Dev Talks About Becoming the Emperor

The idea of having in-game ideological and unanswerable power and authority might be the power-fantasy of many a mind who wants such desirables in real life, and it’s a commodity commonly fought over in the realm of fantasy. Like most in-game positions in power, rising to become an emperor from scratch can be an steep cliff to face. It is possible to be the emperor of Cyrodiil though, as pointed out by The Elder Scrolls: Online game director, Paul Sage, during an interview with Official Xbox Magazine , but such a position is still quite difficult to obtain without a little bit of elbow grease.

Sage discussed how players could become the emperor of Cyrodiil and what the end result would entail. It’s not a case that becoming the emperor is just an honorary title either. Becoming the emperor also unlocks an entirely separate skill tree that will be permanent to you throughout your ESO career. So, even if you either step down from the throne, or are usurped, you will still retain the skills you’ve gained from that skill tree. What’s more, becoming emperor will unlock bonuses for your peers.

“Players who become Emperor will get a full skill line that they keep throughout the rest of their lives in The Elder Scrolls Online ,” Sage explained. “It won’t be easy to become Emperor, but we think people will be glad they worked for it.”

Teamplay, kills and controlling territory are what contribute to working your way up to the throne. Heading to Cyrodiil, ESO’s PvP area, and performing in vicious (but fair) acts of in-game murder, siege, conquest and support will grant you Alliance Points (as well as XP and loot too). Conquering the keeps surrounding Cyrodiil and its Imperial City expands your alliance’s territory and also gives alliance-wide bonuses. The more keeps you control, the more territory you’ll have and the more (and better) bonuses you’ll receive. The alliance member with the most Alliance Points of whichever alliance with the most points that controls all of the territories of Cyrodiil will be crowned the Emperor of Cyrodiil.

No word has been mentioned of players being able to obtain the Emperor title without having to engage in PvP warfare (at least as far as I’m aware). So, if you’re wanting in-game ideological and unanswerable power and authority, you may have to lob off a few in-game heads to do so.

The Elder Scrolls: Online is slated to launch on PC and Mac in April this year, with a console version coming to both Xbox One and PlayStation 4 shortly after in June. The game is currently in Beta, and sign-ups are available here .
