Epic Games Implementing Natal Support for Unreal Engine

Epic Games Implementing Natal Support for Unreal Engine

None

Today, the gaming world fell into a tizzy when Epic Games’ Mark Rein told OXM:

“We’re just sitting down with [Natal] in the next two weeks I think, to bring our studio guys in to have a look,” he said. “I have no idea what we’re going to do from a game standpoint, but from an engine standpoint, it’s definitely cool stuff and we will support it.”

“I think any future Xbox games we make will have some Natal support,” he added. “We always want to have something that exploits the unique capabilities of a platform.”

In spite of the first comment, the second revelation was construed by many to mean that Epic Games was planning to put Natal support into every one of their games going forward. However, Mark Rein clarified his statements to G4TV’s Patrick Klepek via email, aligning the company’s position more toward supporting Natal through the Unreal Engine – that implementation of the product in their games may not be quite as extensive as some were quick to latch on to.

“At this point I’m only speaking for the engine. I was speculating on the kind of things I, as a gamer, could see implemented in Natal for shooter-style games. Sorry if there was any confusion there.”

In other words, we’ll just have to wait and see what Epic Games has in store for Natal as a game developer, but as a development toolset, Unreal Engine will evolve in order to accommodate such technology.
