Originally making its debut on the Famicom in 1987 before making its way West later that same year, Capcom's Mega Man is one of the legendary studio's flagship franchises. In addition to helping make Capcom a household name, Mega Man would go on to serve as a major inspiration on the action-platformer genre, including some of the earliest implementations of non-linear gameplay via its main mechanic — having the freedom to choose the order in which you fight each game's different bosses. Aside from the mainline series, there are several side series within the Mega Man franchise, some of which shift their gameplay style from the original action-platformer style to other genres, including, but not limited to, role-playing games, turn-based tactics, one-on-one fighters, and more. And of course, the titular hero Mega Man remains one of the most iconic and recognizable characters in gaming.
Original Mega Man Series (Mainline Games)
Mega Man
- Release Date — December 17, 1987
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 81% (Generally Favorable)
The original Mega Man is one of several seminal games released on the Famicom/NES in 1987, and one of the first action-platformer titles to implement non-linear gameplay through its boss selection and their corresponding weaknesses to each other's weapons.
Mega Man 2
- Release Date — December 24, 1988
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 86% (Generally Favorable)
A year after the original Mega Man's success, Capcom would follow up with a sequel that improves upon its predecessor in nearly every way. In addition to being largely considered one of the best NES games and best action-platformers ever made, Mega Man 2 has one of the most iconic soundtracks of any game of the 3rd console generation.
Mega Man 3
- Release Date — September 28, 1990
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
If Mega Man 3 has a downside, it's that it sticks very closely to the innovations from Mega Man 2. But with a foundation that strong, you can hardly fault Mega Man 3 for giving players more of a good thing. Out of the original trilogy of Mega Man games, Mega Man 3 is perhaps the most polished and features an excellent roster of 8 Robot Masters.
Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge
- Release Date — July 26, 1991
- Platforms — Game Boy
- Review Aggregate Score — 69% (Mixed or Average)
The first Mega Man game for Game Boy, Mega Man: Dr. Wily's Revenge is an interesting title that blends elements from both the first and second NES Mega Man games. The rest of the Game Boy Mega Man titles would follow suit by mixing stages from previously released games in the mainline Mega Man series.
Mega Man 4
- Release Date — December 6, 1991
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
Arriving just a year after Mega Man 3, Mega Man 4 is very similar to the first three games in the franchise, albeit with a brand-new group of Robot Masters to decipher their weaknesses and defeat. Notably, Mega Man 4 is the first game in the series to introduce a new antagonist in Dr. Cossack.
Mega Man II
- Release Date — December 20, 1991
- Platforms — Game Boy
- Review Aggregate Score — 69% (Mixed or Average)
Similar to Dr. Wily's Revenge, Mega Man II on the Game Boy combines bosses from both Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3. It's also the only game in the series to be developed by Thinking Rabbit, with all the other Game Boy Mega Man titles coming from Minukuchi Engineering.
Mega Man 5
- Release Date — December 4, 1992
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 78% (Generally Favorable)
1992's Mega Man 5 has the unfavorable distinction of being the first noticeable dip in quality of the mainline Mega Man games, but it's still a very competent action platformer that provides subtle iterations on the series' formula.
Mega Man III
- Release Date — December 11, 1992
- Platforms — Game Boy
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
Once again, Mega Man III is yet another Game Boy Mega Man game that combines bosses from two mainline entries to form a unique handheld experience. In the case of Mega Man III, this includes featuring bosses from Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 4.
Mega Man IV
- Release Date — October 29, 1993
- Platforms — Game Boy
- Review Aggregate Score — 74% (Mixed or Average)
Launching at the tail end of 1993, Mega Man IV would arrive shortly after its Game Boy predecessor, Mega Man III, and just ahead of the launch of the final NES Mega Man game, Mega Man 6. It combines bosses from Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 5 to form its stages.
Mega Man 6
- Release Date — November 5, 1993
- Platforms — Famicom/NES
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
Despite being the lowest-reviewed mainline Mega Man game on the NES, Mega Man 6 closes out the series' initial 8-bit era with a bang, featuring plenty of new gameplay elements that differentiate it from its 5 predecessors. The most important of these are the new branching pathways in stages, which would reappear in Mega Man X as a major element of the series moving forward.
Mega Man V
- Release Date — July 22, 1994
- Platforms — Game Boy
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
The fifth and final Mega Man game for the Game Boy, Mega Man V is unique among its Game Boy Mega Man cohort in that it features original bosses rather than recycling and combining enemies from previous mainline Mega Man games.
Mega Man: The Wily Wars
- Release Date — October 21, 1994
- Platforms — Sega Mega Drive/Genesis
- Review Aggregate Score — 74% (Mixed or Average)
The one and only Mega Man game on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, Mega Man: The Wily Wars is both a remaster and a compilation. It brings together the first three games in the Mega Man series under one umbrella and reimagines them with 16-bit graphics. Notably, the title only saw an official physical release in Japan and PAL regions, with the North American release limited to the Sega Channel.
Mega Man 7
- Release Date — March 24, 1995
- Platforms — Super Famicom/SNES
- Review Aggregate Score — 71% (Mixed or Average)
Not long after the series would enter its next era courtesy of Mega Man X, Capcom would deliver a new mainline Mega Man game on the SNES via Mega Man 7. This title is very similar to the 6 mainline Mega Man games on the NES but features enhanced visuals and music courtesy of the SNES' power. Mega Man 7 was actually developed by a different team at Capcom while the mainline series veterans were working on Mega Man X.
Mega Man
- Release Date — October 1995
- Platforms — Game Gear
- Review Aggregate Score — 79% (Generally Favorable)
Released in late 1995 as a Game Gear exclusive, Mega Man is the one original game in the series to be developed for a Sega console, containing a mixture of bosses from Mega Man 4 and Mega Man 5 on the NES. Notably, the title's visuals and sound are a marked improvement over the NES Mega Man games, but its zoomed-in perspective and erratic enemy movements cement it as one of the more difficult handheld Mega Man games.
Mega Man 8
- Release Date — December 17, 1996
- Platforms — PlayStation, Sega Saturn
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
Arriving just ahead of the series' 10th anniversary, Mega Man 8 is the eighth mainline game in the Mega Man series and the first entry on 32-bit hardware. Despite following the same classic Mega Man formula, Mega Man 8 features some bright and polished visuals that make great use of both the PlayStation and Sega Saturn's capabilities.
Mega Man & Bass
- Release Date — April 24, 1998 (JP)
- Platforms — Super Famicom, Game Boy Advance
- Review Aggregate Score — 79% (Generally Favorable)
The final Mega Man game to release on the Super Famicom, Mega Man & Bass is the first game in the series to allow players to take control of both Mega Man and his enemy-turned-ally Bass (known as Forte in Japan). This title would originally be Japan-exclusive, later receiving a localization for the Game Boy Advance.
Mega Man Powered Up
- Release Date — March 2, 2006
- Platforms — PSP
- Review Aggregate Score — 83% (Generally Favorable)
The PSP would be home to two excellent Mega Man remakes, with the first of them being Mega Man Powered Up. Powered Up is a 2D/3D remake of the original Mega Man that uses a charming chibi-style look for all the character models.
Mega Man 9
- Release Date — September 22, 2008
- Platforms — Mobile, PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
- Review Aggregate Score — 82% (Generally Favorable)
Twelve years after the previous mainline entry, Mega Man 9 would arrive for 7th generation consoles in 2008 as a triumphant return to form. The game reverts back to the retro-styled 8-bit visuals of the first 6 Mega Man games and retains the same classic gameplay, including 8 brand-new Robot Masters and a final gauntlet against Dr. Wily.
Mega Man 10
- Release Date — March 1, 2010
- Platforms — PlayStation 3, Wii, Xbox 360
- Review Aggregate Score — 79% (Generally Favorable)
While it wouldn't be quite as well-received as its predecessor, Mega Man 10 is another classically-styled return to form for the series that launched on 7th-generation consoles. Mega Man 10 is a pivotal game in the series' lore, with Mega Man teaming up with both Dr. Wily and Proto Man to stop a disease threatening all of robotkind.
Mega Man 11
- Release Date — October 2, 2018
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One
- Review Aggregate Score — 80% (Generally Favorable)
The most recent mainline Mega Man game, Mega Man 11 is a mix of both classic gameplay and newer, modern presentation. The title uses a high-definition 2.5D art style that brings Mega Man's world and its inhabitants to life in a way not seen before, and the game's unique mechanic, the Double Gear system, adds a bit of strategy to how players approach each stage, opting for either increased power or the ability to slow time.
Mega Man X
- Release Date — December 17, 1993
- Platforms — Super Famicom/SNES
- Review Aggregate Score — 89% (Generally Favorable)
The first Mega Man game for the Super Famicom/SNES, Mega Man X is a fresh new take on the series' formula that transports players into a bleak future where Dr. Wily has won his war against Dr. Light. No longer Mega Man, players take on the role of his successor, X, along with his ally Zero, as the two take on the villainous Sigma and his legion of rogue reploids known as "Mavericks".
Mega Man X2
- Release Date — December 16, 1994
- Platforms — Super Famicom/SNES
- Review Aggregate Score — 82% (Generally Favorable)
The second game in the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X2, would arrive just a year after the first and continues much of the gameplay from the first entry. Players select from 6 different stages, each of which is guarded by a powerful Maverick known as an X-Hunter. Stages are somewhat non-linear and contain branching pathways with secrets and upgrades, and X must decipher each X-Hunter's weakness to complete stages in an optimal order.
Mega Man X3
- Release Date — December 1, 1995
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Super Famicom/SNES
- Review Aggregate Score — 71% (Mixed or Average)
The third game in the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X3, is noteworthy for being the final Mega Man game to release on the SNES in the West (with 1998's Mega Man & Bass being a Japan-exclusive title). Generally considered to be the weakest of the three Mega Man X games on the Super Nintendo, Mega Man X3 does little to distinguish itself from its two predecessors, though it does feature some key visual enhancements that cement it as one of the SNES' best-looking action-platformers.
Mega Man X4
- Release Date — August 1, 1997
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation, Sega Saturn
- Review Aggregate Score — 75% (Generally Favorable)
The first Mega Man X game for 32-bit hardware, Mega Man X4 would debut on the PlayStation and Sega Saturn before eventually making its way to PC a year later (as one of the few Mega Man X games to do so). X4 is noteworthy for being the first game in the series to give players a choice at the game's beginning between choosing to play as Mega Man's successor X or his sword-wielding ally, Zero.
Mega Man Xtreme
- Release Date — October 20, 2000
- Platforms — Game Boy Color
- Review Aggregate Score — 69% (Mixed or Average)
Similar to the original Mega Man games on Game Boy, Mega Man Xtreme is a short-lived spin-off series of titles that merges together bosses and stages from mainline Mega Man X games to form a unique handheld approximation of Mega Man X on the Game Boy Color. The first Xtreme features stages from both Mega Man X and Mega Man X2.
Mega Man X5
- Release Date — November 30, 2000
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
2000s Mega Man X5 is an interesting entry in the Mega Man X series, thanks to how many innovations it brings to the traditional formula. Like Mega Man X4, players will select between either X or Zero before each stage, but Mega Man X5 takes things a step further by giving disadvantages to the hero players don't select, making playing subsequent stages with them more difficult. Additionally, X and Zero each earn unique rewards from defeating bosses.
Mega Man Xtreme 2
- Release Date — July 19, 2001
- Platforms — Game Boy Color
- Review Aggregate Score — 67% (Mixed or Average)
The second and final game in the Mega Man Xtreme spin-off series, Mega Man Xtreme 2 features new stages pulled from Mega Man X3 and X4 and some slightly improved visuals, but is otherwise very similar to its predecessor. It has since earned a bit of a cult following as a unique, 8-bit rendition of the 16 and 32-bit Mega Man X games it pulls from.
Mega Man X6
- Release Date — November 29, 2001
- Platforms — PlayStation
- Review Aggregate Score — 65% (Mixed or Average)
Taking place shortly after the events of Mega Man X5 and releasing almost a year to the day after its predecessor, Mega Man X6 would end up being the final Mega Man X game on 32-bit hardware before the series moved on to the PlayStation 2. Mega Man X6 is noteworthy for being the first game to give X an energy sword like Zero's, though players can still unlock Zero as a playable character by finding secrets spread throughout each stage.
Mega Man X7
- Release Date — July 17, 2003
- Platforms — PlayStation 2
- Review Aggregate Score — 58% (Mixed or Average)
Long considered to be the "black sheep" of the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X7 is an odd entry in the franchise since it doesn't allow players to even play as X until roughly halfway through the game. Instead, X7 focuses on the rogue Maverick Axl and Zero as the two fight for their lives against the Maverick group "Red Alert".
Mega Man X: Command Mission
- Release Date — July 29, 2004
- Platforms — GameCube, PlayStation 2
- Review Aggregate Score — 67% (Mixed or Average)
Despite its somewhat middling critical reception, Mega Man X: Command Mission is a very competent RPG spin-off of the Mega Man X series that features developer talent from Capcom's Breath of Fire series. Like the Breath of Fire games, Mega Man X: Command Mission features turn-based combat and is a more narrative-driven adventure.
Mega Man X8
- Release Date — December 7, 2004
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation 2
- Review Aggregate Score — 68% (Mixed or Average)
The final game in the Mega Man X series, Mega Man X8, bounces back from the criticisms that Mega Man X7 received to deliver a sort of "return to form" for the series' swansong. Once again, players control both X and his ally Zero as the two traverse a variety of side-scrolling action-platformer stages to stop the rogue Reploids known as "Mavericks".
Mega Man Maverick Hunter X
- Release Date — December 15, 2005
- Platforms — PSP
- Review Aggregate Score — 79% (Generally Favorable)
The second of two Mega Man remakes for the PSP, Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter is a 2.5D reimagining of the original Mega Man X. And unlike Mega Man Powered Up, which uses a chibi art style, Mega Man X: Maverick Hunter sticks closely to the art direction and character designs of the SNES original.
Mega Man Legends
- Release Date — December 18, 1997
- Platforms — Nintendo 64, PC, PlayStation
- Review Aggregate Score — 73% (Mixed or Average)
The first RPG spin-off in the Mega Man series, Mega Man Legends is a bit of a cult-classic ARPG that mixes classic Mega Man gameplay with elements of turn-based JRPGs and exploration pulled straight out of Tomb Raider.
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne
- Release Date — July 22, 1999
- Platforms — PlayStation
- Review Aggregate Score — 77% (Generally Favorable)
The Misadventures of Tron Bonne is a one-off spin-off of a spin-off, acting as a prequel to the original Mega Man Legends and giving players some insight into the backstory of that game's breakout star, Tron Bonne. The title is notable for mixing three different gameplay styles, including featuring a variety of block-pushing (sokoban) puzzle stages.
Mega Man Legends 2
- Release Date — April 20, 2000
- Platforms — PC, PlayStation
- Review Aggregate Score — 76% (Generally Favorable)
As the final game in the short-lived, but much-loved, spin-off series, Mega Man Legends 2 is a fitting farewell to Mega Man's RPG era. The title vastly improves the visuals and gameplay of its predecessor to deliver a commendable 3D ARPG experience with compelling characters and plot. However, the game's ending presents an unresolved cliffhanger thanks to the cancelled third entry.
