EA SPORTS announced today that FIFA Online is coming, and that it will be a free-to-play, browser-based online soccer game. The European closed beta starts on February 3rd, while the English version European open beta will start in June – presumably timed to coincide with World Cup 2010. Though it’s browser-based and free-to-play, EA promises that the experience will be topnotch stating, “EA SPORTS FIFA Online will offer an authentic soccer experience with 30 licensed leagues, 500 clubs and more than 15,000 players.” Micro-transactions will be part of the business model, but they aren’t supposed to skew gameplay in favor of consumers. FIFA Online is being developed jointly by EA Singapore and EA Canada. Press Release: REDWOOD CITY, Calif.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Electronic Arts (NASDAQ:ERTS) announced today development of a free*, downloadable game called EA SPORTS™ FIFA Online that will make its most popular and highest rated^ videogame franchise available to soccer fans with a broadband internet connection and an average spec laptop computer or desk-top personal computer.
