Originally released in the West as Final Fantasy III on the SNES, Final Fantasy 6 is one of the two series games included in the PlayStation’s Final Fantasy Anthology. The Anthology would be released in 2000, bringing Final Fantasy 5 to the West for the first time and providing fans with the first official port of Final Fantasy 6 to modern hardware. The PS1 port of Final Fantasy 6 is perhaps the best to appear on the console, keeping the script and gameplay completely intact from its original SNES format and featuring better load times than the other titles in the Final Fantasy Anthology and Final Fantasy Chronicles compilations.
Once again, developer Tose would assist with porting the game from the SNES/Super Famicom to the PlayStation. While the PS1 version of FF6 does not include any of the bonuses present in the later Game Boy Advance release (such as bonus dungeons and a more accurate translation), it does introduce some new features in comparison to the original SNES cartridge. One of the more important is the ability to quickly save via the “Memo Save” function, allowing players to suspend the game and pick back up at a later time by recording progress to the PlayStation’s internal RAM. Additionally, the Final Fantasy Anthology version of FF6 contains new full-motion video opening and ending cinematics.
Final Fantasy 6 Premise
The story of Final Fantasy 6 is one of the first narratives in the series to take players out of the traditional high-fantasy setting of previous games and into a modernized industrial revolution. The world of Final Fantasy 6 is recovering following a disastrous war between magic users (The War of the Magi) that nearly destroyed the planet. In its wake, the people forget how to use magic and begin to become dependent on technology, ushering in a new technological revolution and modernization of the world. It is in this environment that the devious Gestahl rises to power by manipulating both technology and the few remnants of magic that remain, leading to a terrible fate in which history will repeat itself.
The gameplay of FF6 is similar to previous games in the series in that battles are still turn-based and see players utilizing menu commands. Rather than having the Job system from FF5 make a return, FF6 introduces the Espers and Magicite. Espers, the only creatures capable of using magic, can turn themselves into crystals called Magicite. When players equip these Magicite crystals, they can learn magic spells and improve their stats, as well as call upon the Esper’s soul within the Magicite as a summon spell. With this system, every character can learn all the magic in the game, but each of FF6‘s ensemble cast also has unique abilities. As such, FF6‘s battle system is somewhat of a middle ground between the 4th and 5th Final Fantasy games.
Final Fantasy 6 Main Characters
Final Fantasy 6 is famous for its “ensemble cast” approach that differs from previous entries, placing multiple heroes as potential “main characters” instead of focusing on one primary protagonist. That said, the game does heavily revolve around the heroine Terra and her struggles to understand her place in the world as a half-human and half-Esper. Joining her are some of the Final Fantasy series’ best allies and a slew of compelling villains, including perhaps the best antagonist in all of Final Fantasy. The main characters in Final Fantasy 6 include:
Heroes
- Terra: One of the few people in the world who can use magic, Terra finds herself the subject of a vicious manhunt by the Gestahlian Empire to control her power.
- Locke: The world’s most talented treasure hunter and thief, Locke puts his skills to good use as a member of the Returners.
- Edgar: The king of Figaro and a fellow member of the Returners resistance group, Edgar is one of the few rulers to oppose the Empire.
- Sabin: Edgar’s twin brother, Sabin leaves his destiny as a ruler to seek freedom as a wandering martial artist.
- Cyan: Cyan is the knight captain of Doma. He joins up with the heroes after the Empire poisons Doma’s water supply, killing his family.
- Shadow: Shadow is a mercenary and ninja who joins up with Sabin and Cyan, eventually becoming a valuable ally to the party.
- Celes: Celes is a former top-ranking general in the Gestahlian Empire. When she is accused of treason and sentenced to execution, Locke rescues her and encourages her to join the Returners.
Villains
- Emperor Gestahl: The leader of the Empire, Gestahl is a power-hungry despot who wishes to control the Espers for their valuable magic power. He will stop at nothing to have his Empire gain total control through the exclusive use of magic.
- General Leo: Another of Gestahl’s top-ranking generals, Leo is an honorable man who respects the Returners and wishes to avoid unnecessary conflict. He is duty-bound to his role as a general but will help the party if it’s the right thing to do.
- Kefka: The mad clown Kefka is one of the most diabolical villains to ever appear in a Final Fantasy game. He openly wishes to sow chaos and discord and will stop at nothing to achieve ultimate power. He eventually stabs the Emperor in the back, destroying the world and becoming a god in the process.

Final Fantasy 6 Cheats & Secrets
While there are no official “cheats” for Final Fantasy 6 on PlayStation, there are several secrets and tricks players can utilize. Additionally, there are many Game Shark codes available for the Final Fantasy Anthology version of the game.
Final Fantasy 6 Secrets
Secret Characters
There are three “secret” characters that players can recruit to their party in FF6. These characters are Mog, the Yeti Umaro, and the Mimic Gogo.
Mog
- The earliest point in the game that players can recruit Mog is after reuniting with Terra in ZoZo.
- Return to Narshe and speak with the Elder, then head to the house with the locked door containing the town’s treasure. You will spot the Lone Wolf stealing treasure.
- Follow him to the frozen Tritoch on the cliff. Lone Wolf will threaten to throw Mog off the edge of the cliff, but Tritoch will attack and knock them both over the edge. Walk up to Mog and interact with him to have him join the party before entering the World of Ruin.
Umaro
- Once the party is powerful enough and can return to Narshe in the World of Ruin, head to where Tritoch is. Fight Tritoch and defeat him to earn his Magicite.
- A chunk of the cliff will fall after defeating Tritoch, sending the party down into the caves.
- If you have Mog in your party, you can find the Yeti Umaro and convince him to join your party.
Gogo
- In the World of Ruin, head to the triangle-shaped island.
- Here, let the Zone Eater enemies consume every member of the party.
- You will enter a cave called Zone Eater’s Belly. Head to the end of the cave to find Gogo and recruit him into your party.
Easy Kills on Enemies and Bosses
There is an easy trick players can use to instantly defeat enemies (and even some bosses). Once a member of the party learns both Vanish and X-Zone (or Doom), you can use this trick. Cast Vanish on an enemy or group of enemies to make them invisible. Then, using X-Zone (for multiple enemies) or Doom (for a single enemy) will instantly kill them.
Casting Ultima 5 Times
If players have both the Quick spell and the Gem Box, they can cast any spell 5 times thanks to Dualcast. The Gem Box allows players to cast any spell twice, while the Quick spell allows the same action in a single turn. If a party member knows both the Ultima and Quick spells, equip them with a Gem Box. Select Dualcast, then select Ultima, and then Quick. Use this twice in a row to cast Ultima a total of 5 times in a single turn.
Attacking 8 Times
Similarly, players can utilize combinations of equipment and relics to attack 8 times in a single turn. After equipping a character with both the Master Scroll/Offering and the Genji Glove, equip each hand with a weapon. During a battle, attack using this character to have them attack 4 times with a weapon in each hand for a total of 8 attacks. Note that you can also cast Quick on this same character to have them attack a total of 16 times.
Edgar’s Chainsaw
Edgar’s “secret” Tool, the Chainsaw, lies waiting in the town of ZoZo. While at the Inn in ZoZo, set the clock to 6:10:50. This opens up a secret pathway with a treasure chest waiting at the end. Open it to obtain the Chainsaw.
Economizer Location
The Economizer is one of the best relics for magic users, reducing the cost of each spell to only 1 MP. There are three ways players can obtain this relic, though one requires sacrificing the Gem Box (which is not recommended).
- In the Phoenix Cave, have Locke attempt to Steal an Economizer from the Apuila enemies
- Fight Brachiosaurs in the “Dinosaur Forest” near Gau’s house in the World of Ruin. These difficult enemies will sometimes drop Economizers, meaning you can obtain multiples if you’re powerful enough.
- Bet the Gem Box at the Coliseum
Moogle Charm Location
After first meeting Mog in the caves below Narshe, investigate the wall behind where he was standing to find the Moogle Charm. This relic eliminates random encounters.
Saving Shadow
To save Shadow and have him able to join you in the World of Ruin, players need to wait for him on the Flying Continent. Though there’s pressure to jump before the timer runs out, simply reach the drop point to land on the Blackjack and wait for the timer to run out. Shadow will show up just in time, prompting all characters to leave safely. If you jump before Shadow appears, he dies and will not reappear in the World of Ruin.
Easy Lore Acquisition for Strago
Lore takes the place of Blue Magic from previous Final Fantasy games and is Strago’s unique ability. Like with Blue Magic, Strago will need to have the enemy cast a particular Lore ability on him in battle to learn it. Obviously, this can be a time-consuming process and very tedious. Thankfully, players can utilize a great workaround once they enter Kefka’s Tower in the World of Ruin. With Strago in your party, encounter a Dark Force. Make sure you have a party member who can cast ReRaise/Life 3 on all party members. The Dark Force will use all Lore attacks Strago doesn’t currently know against him.
Character Locations in World of Ruin
Players will begin their time in the World of Ruin as Celes and need to recruit every member of the party. You can find each character in the following locations:
- Sabin: Sabin is unmissable, as he’s the first character Celes will reunite with in Tzen after reaching the shore in her raft.
- Edgar: Edgar is operating under the secret identity of the thief Gerad. Follow him into Figaro Castle to reunite with him and defeat the tentacles choking the castle’s machinery.
- Setzer: After saving Figaro Castle, head to Kohlingen and talk to Setzer until he joins you. After, you can head to Darill’s Tomb and get the Falcon airship.
- Cyan: Head to ZoZo and use Rust Aid on the door. Climb Mt. ZoZo and reunite with Cyan in his stationery room.
- Gau: With the Falcon airship, head back to the Veldt with three characters in your party to reunite with and recruit Gau.
- Relm: Head to Jidoor and defeat Chadarnook in Owzer’s mansion. Relm will rejoin the party after the battle.
- Terra: Head back to Mobliz after recruiting a few party members to fight Phunbaba and reunite with Terra.
- Shadow: Enter the cave on the Veldt and encounter Shadow’s dog Interceptor. He will lead the team to a treasure chest containing the Ichigeki. Bet this weapon at the Coliseum to reunite with Shadow.
- Locke: After obtaining enough party members to form two full 4-person teams, head to the Phoenix Cave. Complete the dungeon to reunite with Locke.
- Strago: With Relm in the party, head to the Tower of Fanatics (Cultist’s Tower) and snap Strago out of his brainwashing.
- Mog: Whether players recruit Mog in the World of Balance or not, he can be recruited by simply heading to Narshe in the World of Ruin and entering the Moogle Cave.
Final Fantasy 6 Boss Hints
Easily Defeat Wrexsoul
Players can utilize the Vanish/X-Zone trick against Wrexsoul and his allies to instantly defeat them. However, this results in players getting none of the rewards they would normally get from the battle.
Easily Defeat Magic Master
The MAgic Master can end up being one of the most difficult boss encounters in FF6 thanks to his rotating magic immunities. Throughout the fight, the Magic Master will regularly change his elemental affinity, which makes them weak to only one particular kind of magic. To work around this, cast Stop and then Scan to see what his current weakness is. Additionally, prepare for his final attack on Ultima before dying by casting ReRaise/Life 3.
Final Fantasy 6 Game Shark Cheats
If players have a PlayStation and a Game Shark device for the console, they can utilize any of the following Final Fantasy Anthology Game Shark codes. Alternatively, players using an emulator can enter any of the following cheats into the emulator’s “Cheat” menu.

Final Fantasy 6 Cheat FAQs
What are the highest stats in Final Fantasy 6?
Similar to other RPGs, stats in Final Fantasy 6 have both “soft” and “hard” caps for their effectiveness. As an example, the “hard” cap (that is, the maximum value players can reach for each stat) is 255. However, most stats lose their effectiveness after reaching 128, which is the “soft” cap. When Min/Max-ing characters in Final Fantasy 6, it’s important to keep the hard and soft stat caps in mind.
How do I increase my stats in Final Fantasy 6?
Players can min/max their characters in Final Fantasy 6 by carefully equipping them with Espers/Magicite during level-up, giving the player more agency over stat distribution. If a particular character is focusing on melee (let’s use Sabin as an example), they will want stats that help them as a melee attacker. While grinding out battles for experience, having that character equip an Esper/Magicite that rewards stat bonuses to things like Attack and Stamina would be essential.
How do you earn money in Final Fantasy 6?
The only surefire way to quickly earn money in Final Fantasy 6 is through completing random encounters with enemies. That said, there are some enemies that drop high amounts of Gil (FF6‘s currency) when defeated. In the World of Ruin, players can regularly encounter and defeat Cactaurs in the desert just outside Maranda. Each battle will reward 10,000 Gil, which players can double by having Relm in their party with the Cat-Ear Hood equipped. This helmet doubles the amount of Gil players earn after each battle, netting 20,000 Gil per Cactaur encounter.
What is the hardest boss in Final Fantasy 6?
While the term “hardest” is subjective and largely based on the strength of the player’s party, there are several bosses in FF6 that will give even powerful parties a run for their money. Of course, the boss with the highest stats and most powerful attacks is the game’s final boss, Kefka. The fight against Kefka at the end of FF6 has multiple phases, each containing attacks capable of wiping out the party if they are not prepared. Another contender for the hardest boss would be the Magic Master, simply because players cannot damage them using physical attacks.
