Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is a remastered version of the classic role-playing game, the 2006 Final Fantasy XII. It offers enhanced graphics, a re-recorded orchestral soundtrack, and various gameplay improvements. The release on more modern platforms brings the epic narrative and strategic gameplay of this JRPG classic to both new and old audiences with unseen enhancements. Included in the new features are the likes of the Zodiac Job System, updated magicks, and new game modes.

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age Premise

Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age is part of the world-renowned Final Fantasy series. It is set in the grand world of Ivalice. In the game, an epic tale of war and destiny unfolds and players get to participate in this historic event. The empires of Archadia and Rozarria wage a seemingly unending battle with the small kingdom of Dalmasca caught in the crossfire. Dalmasca, swallowed by the Archadian Empire, takes a stand for its own after Princess Ashe leads a resistance with the help of a young adventurer, Vaan. They band up with a group of allies and embark on a quest to free their homeland from the tyranny of the empire.

In addition to the epic narrative, usual in a Final Fantasy setting, the renewed game comes with a new Zodiac Job System and better character customization with 12 classes with class combinations. Magicks and abilities have also been overhauled and offer new options for deeper strategy. The weapons and armor come with updated stats and players are able to engage in new combat challenges. Now, thanks to the updated graphics and UI, players also get a transparent overlay map, speed mode for faster movement and combat, and an autosave feature. The audio experience has also been revamped with re-recoded music by a full orchestra.

The cast is as important as the narrative or the gameplay in Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age. The game comes with a distinct set of heroes each with complex backgrounds, motivations, and quirks. The main story involves Princess Ashe, the rightful heir to Dalmasca’s throne, as she joins forces with others. These include Vaan, an orphan with aspirations of becoming a sky pirate, and Balthier, a confident sky pirate who values his freedom. The rogue group of freedom fighters is tasked with releasing the Dalmasca from the grips of a mighty Empire.

Key Characters

Ashe: Ashe is the princess of Dalmasca and the rightful heir to the throne. She leads a resistance against the conquering Archadian Empire. She is fueled by a deep sense of duty for her homeland and a desire for justice for her fallen kingdom.
Vaan: Vaan is an orphan from the streets of Rabanastre in Dalmasca. He aspires to become a sky pirate and command an airship of his own. His adventurous spirit is crushed by the weight of the occupation by the Archadian Empire. This is why he joins the resistance Ashe is brewing in the hopes of more freedom.
Balthier: Balthier is a sky pirate with a hidden past, who lives for freedom in the skies of Ivalice. and adventure across Ivalice’s skies. He is a confident individual who is his own boss on the airship Strahl. He is from the capital of the Archadian Empire, Archades, and is excellent with firearms.
Fran: Fran is Balthier’s Viera companion. She excels in archery and has a deep connection to the natural world. As the only non-hume member in the cast of heroes, her input is invaluable throughout their journey. She’s also known as Master of Weapons, which is a testament to her knowledge and craftsmanship.
Basch: Basch is a captain in the Order of the Knights of Dalmasca. He was wrongfully accused and seeks to clear his name. He has a strong sense of duty and wants to protect the royal family and fight for his country’s freedom.
Penelo: Penelo, a close friend of Vaan’s since childhood, shares his dream of a better life. Although she has lost her family in the war, she has an optimistic outlook on life. While her happy-go-lucky attitude might suggest otherwise, her brothers from the Order have taught her well.
