Progressive Nintendo fans have been clamoring for the ability to marry same sex characters in Fire Emblem ever since the emotional bond system was introduced, and now it appears as if Nintendo is finally ready to give them what they want. But leave it to the Big N to make this progressive move just about as hilarious as it possibly could have been.
There is a female character who can fall in love with a female main character, and a male character that can fall in love with a male main character. However, they exist in different versions of the game.
If you haven’t been keeping up with Fire Emblem Fates news, the game comes in two different versions: Birthright and Conquest , kind of like Pokemon except each version also tells a different story. “In the Conquest edition of the game, there is a male character that the game’s player may have his/her male main character marry after they bond in battle. Similarly, the Birthright edition features a female character that a female main character may marry after bonding in battle,” Nintendo said.
A third story will be released as DLC which brings the two stories together, and both characters can be encountered in that story.
Leave it to Nintendo to reduce gender identity and sexuality to a Pokemon style collectability problem. Oh it’s a progressive step in the right direction, just a hilarious one. I hear if you collect both versions of Fire Emblem Fates , you get to fall in love with and marry Arceus!
