Gamescom 2011: New Wii Model Won’t Play GameCube Games

None

It’s kind of weird that Nintendo would release a new version of the Wii this late in the game. With the Wii U due out next year, it seems like the Wii is pretty much on its deathbed. Other than a few late titles like Skyward Sword and Rhythm Heaven, the Wii has mostly given way to the HD titles and the 3DS (which also isn’t doing that well right now.)

Nonetheless, Nintendo is releasing a brand new Wii in Europe that is kind of dumbed-down compared to the Wiis we have right now. First of all, it won’t come with a stand. Instead, it’s designed to lay flat, much like the Wii U. Second, it won’t be backward compatible. Granted, at this point the GameCube is so far removed from the current generation that most people won’t care, but I know more than one gamer who will be pissed that they can no longer pop their copy of Super Smash Bros. Melee into the Wii for a quick bit of fighting game nostalgia.

On the upside, the bundle will include a Wii Remote Plus, a Wii Nunchuck, and a copy of Wii Party and Wii Sports. So if you are really, really, really late to the Wii party (see what I did there?) this bundle has you covered.

Nintendo has also said there will be more value-priced Wii bundle announced very soon.
