JK Rowling Announces “Pottermore” Virtual World

JK Rowling Announces “Pottermore” Virtual World

None

With Harry Potter’s 8-movie journey coming to an end in 3 weeks, fans around the world are clamoring for more adventures in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. And they are going to get their wish. Sort of. After a week of buildup, an owl-saturated countdown clock, and plenty of Internet speculation, “Pottermore” was finally revealed to be—wait for it—an online reading experience.

In a video announcement, JK Rowling described it as a new “interactive” reading experience. You can explore new moments in the book, and Rowling has said there are several details about Harry Potter’s world that she has been “hoarding” over the years that will be revealed in the online world. Pottermore will also feature several user-created “spaces” that will help shape the online world of Harry Potter. Though this feature wasn’t really elaborated on, I would imagine it will be some sort of social networking functionality.

As a side note, JK Rowling said in her announcement that the Pottermore website would be the only place to purchase Harry Potter e-books. Of course, the cynic in me says that this was probably the whole point of the announcement in the first place. After all, where are they going to get their money from? But this new interactive Harry Potter website could be cool, and we’ll reserve judgment until the thing actually launches this fall.
