Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards is a 1987 adventure game developed and published by Sierra On-Line. The game was released for Amiga, and MS-DOS, before being ported to other platforms such as PC, Atari ST, and Macintosh.
Upon release, Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards was met with positive reviews. Its raunchy humor proved to be a massive breath of fresh air in a sea of generic adventure games. Despite this, its initial sales were terrible, with just 4,000 copies sold upon its initial launch. It eventually went on to sell over 300,000 copies, with strong word-of-mouth carrying it in the long run.

In Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, you must control the titular Larry as he makes his way around five areas of the city of Lost Wages. Movement is done via the directional arrow keys. You must manually type your commands in order to interact with items or speak to other characters. If you write an incorrect command, the game offers hints as to how you can correct it in the context of the current scene.
The main objective is to help Larry woo various women across Lost Wages in an attempt to help him lose his virginity. You must collect money and gifts throughout the game, which can help win these women over. Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards begins with a seven-hour timer to complete the game. If you haven’t helped Larry reach his goal at the end of this, he commits suicide, ending the game.
This isn’t the only way you can reach a Game Over, though. Moving between areas without hailing a taxi results in Larry being killed in traffic or by mugging. He can also have unprotected intercourse with a prostitute at any point, which results in him contracting a fatal sexually transmitted disease. It’s every bit as insane as it sounds, almost four decades after its original release.

While Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards has a wide cast of characters to interact with, the raunchy plot puts a few characters front and center. Of course, there’s the titular Larry, and the rest of the main characters are the objects of his affection that you’ll pursue over the course of the game. Here’s a little more on each of them.
- Larry: Larry is a 38-year-old man on a quest to lose his virginity. He heads to the city of Lost Wages to complete his mission, despite being terrible with the ladies.
- Fawn: Fawn is one of the potential ‘love’ interests of the game. She resides in the club, and is shown to be of poor character.
- Faith: Faith is one of the girls that Larry pursues in the game, although she remains faithful to her boyfriend.
- Eve: Eve is the girl who Larry really wants above the rest. She spends her time in the penthouse of Lost Wages Casino.

Beginning in 1987, the Leisure Suit Larry series has been shocking gamers with its naughty humor for almost four decades now. During the early years when the adventure game genre was at its peak, Sierra On-Line was consistent in capitalizing on the success of the series. with frequent releases until the mid-’90s.
After that, it felt like the Leisure Suit Larry series never moved with the times, resulting in fewer releases as the adventure genre became less popular. Despite this, new iterations arrived periodically, with a new game as recently as 2020.
Leisure Suit Larry won’t ever take over the gaming industry, but it’s always good to see a new title pop up every few years. Its unique brand of debauchery is always a breath of fresh air.
