Mario and Sonic Sell 5 Million Copies Worldwide

Mario and Sonic Sell 5 Million Copies Worldwide

None

Sega announced today that Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games has sold five million copies worldwide in slightly more than three months. The game was developed for the Wii and DS by Sega with input and oversight from Nintendo’s developers. The title marked the first time that Mario and Sonic were available together. In addition to the star players, other Nintendo and Sega icons such as Luigi, Knuckles, Yoshi, and Tails also make an appearance.

Published by Sega in both Europe and North America, and by Nintendo in Japan, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games debuted on November 6, 2007, when the Wii version hit store shelves in the United States. According to the NPD Group, “the game was one of the top-ten best-sellers in the United States – across all platforms – in the critical holiday sales month of December.”

Five million copies is an incredible milestone for any videogame, let alone doing it in just over three months. Sega proved the old adage of, “if you can’t beat them, join them” to be absolutely appropriate for the videogame industry. Look for sales of Super Smash Bros. Brawl, which pairs videogame icons of all walks together, to be even more impressive!
