Microsoft Changing The Gamerscore System

Microsoft Changing The Gamerscore System

None

Xbox owners who already take the Gamerscore achievement system entirely too seriously are about to become annoyingly happy; Microsoft announced yesterday that they would be tweaking the system slightly to increase the max Gamerscore for downloadable games.

A rumor about the update hit the Internet yesterday afternoon, and was eventually confirmed by Major Nelson himself: “Starting next month (April 2012) all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games will have the option to increase from 200 to 400 Gamerscore points, with the addition of up to 30 Achievements. Even better, this Gamerscore increase will be required in all new Xbox LIVE Arcade games starting in June 2012.”

So, not only are the increasing the Achievement count, they’re making it a requirement for developers in order to get their games certified for Xbox LIVE.

By raising the Gamerscore for XLA games, Microsoft is most likely trying to push developers and consumers into a digital-only mindset when purchasing their games. Physical DVDs are fine, for the most part, but it puts a large percentage of money into the pockets of retailers like GameStop, and creates a used game market that makes almost no money for Microsoft. Moving consumers toward the Xbox LIVE Marketplace puts a tidy bow on both problems.

Plus I can buy Xbox LIVE Arcade games without putting my pants on. So, it’s more convenient for me too.
