Microsoft is going to release a brand new Terms of Use for Xbox Live, and it includes a few lines that are making some gamers a little upset. According to a post on Xbox.com, the new terms of service will allow Microsoft to “share key data points” across accounts and apps. It specifically mentions your “name, address, email address, and date of birth.” By accepting the Terms of Use, you give Microsoft the ability to share this information with any third party app installed on your Xbox 360 or Xbox One. This includes apps like Netflix, ESPN, Hulu, and so forth.
Before you start flying off the handle about how Microsoft is invading your privacy, note that the current Microsoft Terms of Use already allows Microsoft to share personal information with third parties, it just wasn’t as well defined as it is now. Microsoft has also gone on record saying that they do not share or sell personal information and that user privacy is one of their primary concerns. However, Microsoft has already been revealed to be cooperating with the NSA , though the amount of information given to the government agency has been limited.
Regardless, you will have to sign these new Terms of Use in order to continue using Xbox Live. The new Terms of Use will go live later this week.
