Neko Atsume Movie Adaptation Is in the Works

Here’s one game I never expected to get a movie adaptation. Neko Atsume , the popular mobile title where you attract cats to your yard and take pictures of their butts, is being made into a live-action film by AMG Entertainment. Titled Neko Atsume no Ie ( The House of Neko Atsume ), the film is being directed by Masatoshi Kurakata of Crossroads fame.

Is Tubbs going to make an appearance a la Shadow the Hedgehog , complete with a pistol and edgy sunglasses? Can Mr. Meowgi paw some sense into his earnest yet foolhardy disciples? Will Billy the Kitten ever find love among the lawless desperados of the western frontier? Alas, my flights of fancy are unlikely to come true, as AMG has released an official synopsis for the film, which reads as follows:

“Meet Katsu Sakumoto (portrayed by Atsushi Ito), a best-selling author who won the newcomer’s award at a young age. Lately, Katsu has had a severe case of writer’s block, and hasn’t been able to write anything at all. In order to get a fresh new start, he moves away to quiet lands, but it doesn’t quite help out his case.

“One day, while at a loss and looking at the garden from his porch, a single cat appears. Katsu makes an attempt to speak to the cat, but it simply just walks away. The thought that even cats would desert Katsu made things more depressing for the writer. However, that night, he decided to leave some cat food at the corner of the garden before going to bed. The food was gone the following morning. This brings a sudden interest in Katsu – and how the story of the young author’s ‘Neko Atsume’ begins.”

Aww. I guess I’ll have to settle for imagining what could’ve been until Neko Atsume no Ie releases in Japan sometime next year.
