Next-Gen Tech Brings Realistic Environments to DRIVECLUB

While any good racer’s bread and butter is certainly its roster of sweet rides, there is something to be said about the tracks under your tires and roadways that whip by you as you speed along.

We certainly take many subtle little details like this for granted. The wind blowing through the trees, the bloom lighting peeking over the mountain in the distance and with DRIVECLUB, the changing real-time weather patterns. Sony’s Blog Manager Fred Dutton recently posted an update to the PlayStation.Blog, which touts the dynamic next-gen weather system (which they hope will add that extra level of realism).

In speaking with Art Director Alex Perkins, Dutton asks exactly how in-depth we can anticipate the expansive weather mechanics to be. Perkins says races will see it “…change dynamically and unpredictably while you race – because we’ve designed it to be just like real weather systems. Spots of rain can become torrential downpours or transition into blizzards, quickly or slowly, and when the clouds clear up the tracks will dry out too. So if you’re in Norway, for example, you’ll face heavier snow when you’re racing atop the mountains and much lighter snow or sleet when you descend to a lower altitude. Lots of things play into this, like elevation, wind speed and temperature. We can even adjust all the way to zero visibility conditions too – the only limit will be the need to balance things for fun and usability.”
