Nintendo’s Eiji Aonuma Talks Link, Zelda and E3!

Welcome to the final day of CheatCC’s E3 2014 coverage. We’ll be monitoring all the info and bring you the latest right from the convention floor in real-time!

While Nintendo didn’t have a presence during the live press conferences this year (as usual) that doesn’t mean they didn’t make a splash. During the digital briefing on Tuesday, one of the most talked about bits of footage came in the form of a brand new Zelda game for the Wii U. In it, we see a character that looks very Link-esque (but it wasn’t quite clear 100%). After producer Eiji Aonuma hinted that perhaps Link was NOT our main character this time ‘round, he recently attempted to clarify these statements. “…I never said that wasn’t Link.” Aonuma says “I said ‘No one ever said that was Link.’ Every game needs to have a protagonist. You have to have a main character, so we create one that is ultimately supposed to become the player. With each iteration of Zelda , we make this main character and it’s not as though this protagonist is not the same character all the time. It’s just a role within the game that the player occupies.”

So, it would seem exactly who will star in the upcoming release has been left a bit ambiguous. However, there is one character that Aonuma would love to see become more of a focal point: Zelda herself. Regarding her future involvement as playable character, the producer touts he’s “…interested in seeing something like that, but I think one of the charm points of this particular franchise is that…Zelda is not the main character…Maybe if she’s the main character, then maybe the title needs to change.”

We’ll bring you more on the latest Legend of Zelda title, which we know is due out sometime in 2015.
