Nintendo's Iwata Confirms Date of Next Zelda; New High-Spec Handheld Forthcoming

None

Japan’s Asahi Shimbun, as reported by IGN and Siliconera, interviewed Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata and discovered a couple important tidbits that will likely affect the wallets of millions of gamers worldwide.

For starters, it has been confirmed by Iwata-san that the next console version of The Legend of Zelda, the first made exclusively for Wii, will release within 2010 – whether that’s fiscal or calendar year is still up in the air, but Nintendo will likely target November/December 2010 to maximize sales a la New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Additionally, and quite possibly more importantly, the next Nintendo handheld has been confirmed. While DS and DSi continue to sell like hotcakes (better actually), plans for a high specification portable is in the pipe.

Specifically, Nintendo plans on releasing a higher definition experience with accelerometer support (i.e. motion sensor). Iwata was quoted by IGN’s Martin Robinson as saying that the next Nintendo handheld will feature, “highly detailed graphics, and it will be necessary to have a sensor with the ability to read the movements of people playing”.

Unlike the next Zelda, a target date for the device is still to be announced. A name for the electronic is also unknown.
