NPD Says More Gamers Play Online on the Xbox 360

PS3 vs Xbox 360. It’s the console war that has raged for years now, and with the release of the PS4 and Xbox One, it’s about time for us to figure out who won. Research group NPD recently released data that will close the book on one chapter of the war. Their numbers show that more gamers use the Xbox 360 for playing games online than the PS3. In fact, Xbox LIVE has logged over 20 billion hours of online gaming in the last twelve months. That’s a 17 percent year over year growth. Yes, even in these last few days, Xbox LIVE is growing!

That being said, these numbers don’t actually track what people do when online, so they could be using entertainment services like Netflix or Hulu. In fact, Microsoft has previously announced that Xbox LIVE users in the U.S. do spend more time with entertainment services than they do with games online. This is more evidence that consoles are much more than game boxes these days , and that gaming will always take a backseat to media capabilities.

Official numbers for the PS3’s online usage were not given. The PS3 is known for not tying a fee to their online services, though the Ps4 will require users to have a PS Plus account to play online.
