Ouya Kickstarter Closes Up

Ouya Kickstarter Closes Up

None

The Kickstarter Campaign for the Ouya, the new Android powered home console, has finally come to a close. Originally, the campaign aimed to raise 950,000 dollars. Upon closing, the campaign has raised roughly 8.6 million dollars. Thus, it looks like we are going to have another contestant in the console wars.

The Ouya team has promised that they will have consoles out by March 2013. They have already garnered support from many third parties. Namco Bandai and Square-Enix, two RPG powerhouses, are both planning to support the new console. Square-Enix has already announced Final Fantasy III as a launch title. In addition, game streaming service OnLive has partnered with the device. This will allow gamers to play high quality games far beyond the Ouya’s specs by simply streaming a video feed of a game being played on a remote server.

The Ouya supports up to four controllers, is hackable without voiding the warranty, and can plug in to any HD or SD TV. It has eight gigabytes of internal flash storage and one gigabyte of ram. Critics have noted that eight gigabytes of storage, which is lower than the amount available on most smartphones, doesn’t allow for a hefty library of downloaded games. The Ouya may need to have its storage expanded in order to compete on the next-generation market.
