Ouya Enters The Console Race

Ouya Enters The Console Race

None

Are you sick of having to choose between three major consoles each new gaming generation? Well now you have to choose between four. Ouya, an independent console, is joining the console race. This new console has a custom-built Android-based operating system that is open to any developer looking to publish on their platform.

The console has some rules, though. For example, every game must have a free portion of some sort, which means we’re likely to see mostly free-to-play/microtransaction-style games. In addition, the console can support any other Android app as well. It comes bundled with TwitchTV, for people who are looking for an HD stream box.

Ouya will sell for 99 dollars, which is a steal compared to the prices of the other consoles on the market. It also seems to be a platform totally built around digital distribution. Its controller looks a bit like a Playstation controller with a touchpad in the middle. The touchpad will allow mobile games to be supported more easily.

Now, what will interest people the most is the console creator’s philosophy on rooting: You can root an Ouya without voiding your warranty! That means you can fiddle with it as much as you want, making the perfect Droid box without any software constraints. This is the first time any console has been so open and accepting of the modding and hacking community.
