People Hate Portal 2

None

Thus far, Portal 2 has been a critical darling. Earning a 4.8 out of 5 on Cheat Code Central and having an aggregate review score of 96 out of 100, it’s clear that game reviewers love Portal 2. Players, on the other hand seem to hate it. Out of 10, the game’s user reviews at aggregate site Metacritic currently sit at 4.1, thanks to an influx of negative reviews from PC gamers.

So, what is everyone so upset about? Well first off, many players are upset about the game’s length, which many people have put at 4-6 hours (including co-op). Then there’s the accusation that the PC version is just a console port (PC gamers point to a “Please do not turn off your console” message as proof of this). The third grievance is based on the Potato Sack ARG, which was supposed to see Portal 2 released early, but instead saw it released an hour after the midnight release of the console version. And just when you thought there was nothing more to complain about, PC gamers are also annoyed that there is $80 worth of DLC for the PC version (most of it, cosmetic) that seems to have been already made available for free to the console versions.

PC gamers are being very vocal about their dislike for Portal 2 (and for Valve as a whole, at the moment) and have taken to review aggregate site, blogs, and Valve’s own forums to shout about it. Are some of their claims warranted? Absolutely. But Valve has a history of not engaging critics, so if you’re expecting anything to be done about the situation, you can keep hoping.
