Phantasy Star Online 2 Following Free-To-Play Model

Phantasy Star Online 2 Following Free-To-Play Model

None

SEGA’s upcoming Phantasy Star Online 2 re-release is being updated for the current generation in more than one way. Not only will it be receiving a host of content and security updates , its pricing plans will be updated for our current generation of free to play MMOs as well.

The game will be free to download and play on the PC, PS Vita, and even mobile platforms such as iOS and Android. Game revenue will come primarily from real-money item transactions. While this might annoy some hardcore purists who believe you shouldn’t be able to pay for power, it certainly does open the game up to a larger fan base.

SEGA also provided some details on the iOS and Android version of the game. Apparently it won’t be the full Phantasy Star experience. Instead, the mobile version will focus on “social game elements” and will include a simpler control scheme and streamlined character creation process. You can share data between the mobile version and the PC/Vita version, but crossplay will not be available. The mobile version will release sometime in winter 2012, between the release of the PC and the Vita versions.
