Nintendo’s early attempt at virtual reality was called the Virtual Boy. It was a noble try, but was seemingly designed to give players headaches and spinal pain. Players had to lean forward to place their head in the unit and, eventually, ocular strain would kick in. A new emulator for the Oculus Rift might just allow players to experience Virtual Boy titles without any of the pratfalls.
The emulator is called VBjin and will work with the Oculus Rift headset. Prior to this emulator, the only two options were to use original hardware or to play 2D versions of the games on other emulators. VBjin isn’t going to make most of these old games good all of a sudden, but it will allow gamers to experience them and there’s something to be said about that. Mario Tennis and Wario Land are especially worth taking a look.
It’s fun to take a look at the early roots of virtual reality and gaming in general. It’s also fun to see what kinds of limitations Nintendo had to work with. Where else can you see games rendered exclusively in various shades of red?
