Oculus Rift Dev is Now Making it’s Own VR Movie

A small in-house team of Oculus Rift developer Oculus VR is working on exploring how virtual reality can be used to experience movies. The team itself, named Oculus Story Studio, will have its first virtual reality short-film debut this week for the Oculus Rift’s Crescent Bay prototype–titled Lost .

The shot-film is said to last roughly five minutes, although it does have an undetermined set length of duration. The pace of Lost will depend on triggers caused by the movement of the viewer; it could last from three minutes or even 10, depending on what the viewer does.

Lost is directed by Saschka Unseld, a former Pixar animator, and the 10-person team behind the short-film was formed to show off what the Oculus Rift could potentially offer to Hollywood filmmakers as well as work out how exactly a movie could be made for virtual reality.

Lost will available to view at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Those wanting to attend will be able to reserve their time by downloading the official Oculus Story Studio app via the Apps Store . Although the company will be showing its first virtual reality movie to the public (the fruit of Oculus Story Studio’s efforts), Oculus VR’s CEO Brendan Iribe cautions viewers that it’s still early days for the in-house studio.

“As excited as we are, I think it’s important that everybody remembers that this is just the beginning,” Iribe points out. “The first time we made any kind of made-for-VR game, I wouldn’t say it was nearly as inspiring as what Saschka and his team have made, so it’s only going to get way way better from here going forward.”
