Oculus Rift Farms Out VR Tech

Oculus Rift Farms Out VR Tech

The Oculus Rift seemingly has a well laid plan. After garnering huge grass-roots support independently, it managed to attract the interest of juggernaut Facebook. So what is the next step along their path to success?

Simply following in the ways of start-ups like Google’s Android platform before them! In a recent interview, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe revealed that the company is actively seeking suitors who can develop their VR technology and mass-distribute it. “If we do want to get a billion people on virtual reality, which is our goal, we’re not going to sell 1 billion pairs of glasses ourselves. We are openly talking to any kind of partner that wants to jump into VR, and there’s a lot of interest right now.” Iribe states.

While the Sony Morpheus is an offshoot of the VR concept, it doesn’t directly compete with it (as one is PC based and the other is console). However, it would appear these kindred spirits could perhaps make strange bed fellows, as Sony is also one of the possible caretakers which may acquire licensing of the ‘Rift for future development. Touting a possible relationship with the PS4 maker, Iribe said, “We showed their key executives our prototypes, and we said if you want to work with us, we are happy to engage deeply and be friends in this industry. It hasn’t gone anywhere past that, but they did show up and opened up to us and in turn we opened up to them.”

We’ll bring you more on the company(s) who acquire the Oculus Rift’s development rights (and what projects spring up as a result) as they become available.
