New Details on Oculus Rift Pricing

With a new, high-end piece of innovative technology like the Oculus Rift hitting the market, it’s easy to imagine it will cost a virtual arm and a leg. Thankfully, those behind the project state it won’t be a toy intended for those with a Bill Gates sized wallet.

One of the men (and women) behind the upcoming VR headset is Palmer Luckey, who assured his new venture is intended for everyone in the gaming community. “…what I’ve always said is that if VR isn’t affordable it might as well not exist for most people…We want to make a consumer VR headset that pretty much anyone can afford.” He touts.

While the word “affordable” is pretty open ended, it’s expected to retail in the ballpark of what other comparable headsets are going for these days (Google Sony’s 3D glasses for more info). However, Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe reveals that it’s not out of the realm of possibility they’d consider just GIVING it away. In what he calls a “fantasy idea,” Iribe suggests, “…we’d love it to be free one day… Obviously it won’t be that in the beginning. We’re targeting the $300 price point right now but there’s the potential that it could get much less expensive with a few different relationships and strategies.”

Tune in tomorrow as I delve deeper into what the new Oculus Rift technology could mean for gaming and real-world applications as well.
