Sony’s Project Morpheus is a “Significant Investment”

Sony’s Project Morpheus is a “Significant Investment”

In speaking with The Guardian on Wednesday, July 2, Sony’s CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Andrew House has revealed that the company’s virtual reality headset, Project Morpheus, is a “ significant investment ” for Sony, and that the concept of virtual reality itself is the “ next frontier of game development .”

It’s definitely more than an experiment. We’ve made some commitments; we’re putting significant investment into the product, ” House told The Guardian.

We do now think that we can get to this point of delivering a magical sense of presence – where your brain tricks you into thinking you’re actually in this place, ” House added. ” We think there’s something there that could be really, really interesting for a next frontier of game development.

When recounting how Sony got involved with developing its own virtual reality headset, House explained that virtual reality–at first–didn’t seem like a viable business option to pursue until a lot of videogame developers starting expressing interest in the concept thanks to Oculus VR’s Oculus Rift, and so the company wanted to bank on the growing talent that was emerging for virtual reality.

With Oculus we saw this ground swell of game development that didn’t necessarily have a monetizable or a business option, but [developers were] so passionate about this space that they were doing this essentially in their spare time, ” House explained to The Guardian. ” It struck me that if there’s a variety of game developers showing interest in this space then it’s probably time to jump in and see if we can play a part and give them the tools they’re looking for.

When asked about Project Morpheus’ market potential, House replied with, ” I don’t know, but I think that at the very least it’s going to be another really interesting advance for the PS4 ecosystem and another way to deliver brand new experiences. That’s what we’re all about.
