Pokémon Black Version 2 Starter Guide: Which Pokémon To Choose

Pokemon Black/White 2 features the same starters as the original Black/White games. Snivy, Oshawott, and Tepig return as the classic water, fire, and grass types trifecta. But, like all Pokemon games, deciding which one is right for you can be difficult. Let’s break down each one and see which Pokemon will lead the way to you becoming the Pokemon Champion.

Snivy

Snivy Pokemon

Snivy is a Grass-Type Pokemon that evolves into Servine and Serperior. Looking at their base stats, Snivy is faster and has a better defense than its counterparts but has considerably less health. While better on defense, its offense is less than desirable.

It should also be mentioned that Snivy is the worst of the three when it comes to Gym battles. Looking at each Gym leader Pokemon type, Snivy has a disadvantage against three leaders while strong against one.

Oshawott

Oshawott

Oshawott is a Water-Type Pokemon that evolves into Dewott and Samurott. It will stay a Water-Type during its evolution line, not picking up any other types. His main attribute is his Special Attack, which is higher than the other three. When looking at his stats, they are more well-rounded and spread out, making Oshawott a strong choice.

Against Gym Leaders, Oshawott is strong against one leader and weak against another. This makes them the best choice from a pure Gym Battle perspective.

Tepig

Tepig Pokemon

Tepig is a Fire-Type Pokemon that evolves into Pignite and Emboar. After its first evolution, Tepig will become a Fire/Fighting-Type, making them the only starter to gain a second type. Its stats are skewed towards its HP and Attack, making Tepig a great offensive Pokemon.

However, taking on a new type will also weaken it to more Pokemon. Similar to Snivy, Tepig is weak against three Gym Leaders and strong against one.

Best Option

Overall, Oshawott is the best option for players for more well-rounded gameplay. However, each Pokemon is viable, and you should choose which one seems more fun. Your starter won’t stay on your team for the entire playthrough. There are much better Pokemon in each type that you can catch down the line.
