Pro Gamers Form World’s First Players Association

Pro Gamers Form World’s First Players Association

Eight professional gaming teams from the ESL have banded together to form the world’s first players association: the “World Esports Association,” or WESA. WESA exists to provide fair representation for professional gamers and give them a platform to voice their concerns, argue for their rights, and convene to discuss best practices. The world of eSports is a rapidly growing one, and there isn’t very much standardization or regulation when it comes to payment, contracts, expectations, and legal rights. This is something WESA hopes to change.

This comes fresh off last week’s controversy with pro League of Legends Team Impulse. The team was banned because management had “…repeatedly failed to pay their players on time and to provide valid contracts.” Because tournaments and leagues are often organized and put on by different publishers and sponsors, something like WESA has become absolutely necessary to ensure that players are all treated fairly and receive a fair share of league profits. This is just the next step in the legitimization of eSports as a global, competitive enterprise.
