Rare Engineer “Most Interested In” Natural Speech For Kinect

According to a leading Kinect engineer, the next big step for the device is natural speech recognition.

Rare engineer David Quinn, who’s worked on the Kinect Sports franchise, says that his team has already started the attempt to implement more advanced voice recognition for titles which utilize the motion sensor.

“We pushed speech pretty hard in [Kinect] Sports 2, but it was also a very say-what-you-see approach; in golf, you change clubs [by saying] ‘four iron’, kind of thing,” he said.

“What I’d like to see and what we’re investigating now is a more natural conversation way of talking to the Kinect, so you can say, ‘Hey, caddy, give me a five iron,’ or ‘Hey, caddy, what should I use now?'”

Quinn says he’s looking to titles such as Mass Effect 3 as good examples of how to go about bringing natural speech to the controller.

“I think is an excellent use of speech,” he says. “You can use speech in Kinect in a more core title, and it really demonstrated that. I think from here on in you’ll see a lot of speech in core games.”

While the potential for failure in such a project may be high, being able to more directly talk to your television and see the results on screen would be a pretty neat endeavor, all things considered. For now, though, the concept will remain just that: an idea.
