Rockstar Explores Taking Grand Theft Auto Beyond America

Rockstar Explores Taking Grand Theft Auto Beyond America

Welcome to Grand Theft Auto Day! It’s a day filled with news about everyone’s favorite crime-based game series, Grand Theft Auto , in celebration of the upcoming release of Grand Theft Auto V .

Rockstar Games co-founder Dan Houser recently sat down with Polygon to talk about GTA’s history and the impact it’s had on gaming culture. One of the more interesting topics discussed was Grand Theft Auto’s future. Houser said that GTA is a pretty America-centric game, but this may not always be the case. “At the moment it feels like [ Grand Theft Auto’s ] D.N.A. is contemporary-ish, America-ish, English-speaking-ish, because that’s what it has been,” he said. “But that doesn’t necessarily limit it to those, that’s just what we’ve done so far.” He went on to say that just about every idea is discussed, including far out ideas like “Caveman Grand Theft Auto, ” though that doesn’t quite make the cut because it takes place before the invention of the wheel.

The only thing that will remain constant, says Houser, is the fact that Grand Theft Auto will always be an open-world game. This gameplay formula is what fans of Grand Theft Auto have liked from the beginning, and it won’t be changing any time soon. Any other idea is fine as long as it doesn’t contradict or somehow spoil these central gameplay aspects.

So what do you think? Will Rockstar do Grand Theft Auto: China edition? Or perhaps Grand Theft Auto: Renaissance Italy? Maybe we will see GTA travel to other planets? What sort of GTA do you want to see?
