Tetris Effect Cheats & Cheat Codes for Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Windows, and More

Tetris Effect is a 2018 adaptation of the 1984 classic puzzle game, Tetris. Soviet software engineer Alexey Pajitnov created the original Tetris arcade-style block-dropping puzzle game that has become popular around the world. There likely isn’t a person on the planet who isn’t at least aware of Tetris‘ existence. Because of its iconic and addictive gameplay, Tetris has become a go-to game for gamers and non-gamers alike to pass the time. Since its 1984 release, many variations of Tetris have been made for different consoles, platforms, and regions of the world.

Tetris Effect, developed by Monstars and Resonair and published by Enhance Games, is an updated Tetris experience that was originally released exclusively for the PlayStation 4. The cool thing about Tetris Effect is that it’s actually supported by PlayStation VR, so players can immerse themselves in Tetris like never before. Eventually, the game was released on other platforms as well, including the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive, and Meta Quest. Gamers can also snag Tetris Effect on Xbox, Windows, and the Nintendo Switch.

Players have responded positively to Tetris Effect overall. Steam rates the game a 10 out of 10, while the Meta Store rates it a 4.6 out of 5. 93% of Google users who weighed in on the topic claim to like the game. Many critics claim that Tetris Effect is a beautiful love letter to Tetris that builds upon the simplistic gameplay by introducing new modes and VR capability. Tetris Effect was nominated for and won multiple awards, including a win for “Best VR/AR Game” at the 2018 Game Critics Awards.

Tetris Effect Premise

Most Tetris-based games don’t feature a story or characters. Tetris has always been a simple puzzle game that involves bricks of different shapes and sizes (called tetrominoes) falling from the top of the screen. Players need to line up these blocks to complete and clear full rows of blocks. As the game goes on, blocks fall more quickly, forcing players to speed up and stay on top of their tetromino placements. If the blocks stack up to the top of the screen, the player receives a “Game Over”.

Almost every variation of Tetris that’s come out in almost 40 years follows this formula in some way. Tetris Effect is no exception. Rather than trying to reinvent the wheel, Tetris Effect updated the base premise of the original by adding music and themes through 30 stages of the game. This added new ways to play by linking the gameplay to the music. Tetris Effect also includes new mechanics and ways for players to clear lines by stopping time and even adding in a meta-game leveling system.

In 2020, a new version of Tetris Effect called Tetris Effect: Connected came out for multiple consoles. Tetris Effect: Connected added a cooperative multiplayer mode. It also added competitive modes as well, so players could face off against one another.

Tetris Effect Main Characters

Since Tetris Effect is a puzzle-solving game that focuses on the actual gameplay and nothing else, the game doesn’t feature a story, a plot, or main characters. Players don’t play as a character, they’re just there to stack tetrominoes.

Tetris Effect Titles in the Series

Since the original Tetris is almost 40 years old, it’s safe to say that Tetris has been made and remade many times. Many Tetris releases were just new publishers getting ahold of the license to release the original game on more platforms in more regions of the world. Since Tetris‘ creation in 1984, many adaptations have been made to create new fun, and interesting ways to play the game. There have also been many recreations that aren’t tied to the main franchise.

While it is possible to download mods and use trainers for Tetris Effect on PC, most variations of this game are console-locked. The game originally came out for the PlayStation 4 and since then, it’s been released on many other consoles. With the updated Tetris Effect: Connected now available, players may be looking for ways to make the game easier. Unfortunately, there aren’t any cheats or cheat codes that will make the game easier in any mode. Players will need to play well in order to keep progressing, especially through the multiplayer and competitive options.

That said, Tetris Effect does offer unlockables, hidden Easter eggs, and achievements to work towards. This guide will break down some of the stretch goals players can achieve.

Challenge Unlockables

  • Theater Mode – Finish Journey mode on any difficulty
  • 1989 Tetris Mode – Reach Player Level 50. There seems to be some confusion about the Player Level 50 reward and the 1989 Tetris Mode because 1989 was originally brought in as a Weekend Ritual event that is no longer available in game. This event made the 1989 game mode available for a limited time. However, reaching Player Level 50 will unlock the 1989 mode permanently.

The 1984 Level Hidden Reward

Tetris Effect’s 1984 Level looks like the original Tetris game as it appeared on a digital computer. Basically, this level presents Tetris in its most authentic and original form. There are two confirmed ways to unlock this level:

  • June 6th – June 6, 1984, is considered the original release date of the very first Tetris game ever made. As a reference to the initial release date, if players play Effect Mode on June 6th, the 1984 Level will immediately unlock. Players cannot cheat the system by changing the date on their console to June 6th. This will not work.
  • The Easter Egg Method – For those who have missed June 6th and are unwilling to wait until next June, there’s another way, the Easter Egg Method. Using a Bluetooth or USB keyboard, PlayStation players can enter the Konami Code (up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, circle, X) while sitting on the title screen. If done correctly, the game will take the player to an old computer-style screen. Once this screen appears, type: ‘06061984’. This is the original launch date of the game. Players will receive a message saying they’ve unlocked 1984 if they’ve completed the steps correctly. This can be done in any version of the game, not just PlayStation.

Tetris Effect Trophies & Achievements

In addition to unlockable in-game rewards, Tetris Effect has a number of trophies and/or achievements players can earn through PlayStation, Xbox, and other platforms. Most of these achievements will be the same or similar across platforms, but since the game was originally a PlayStation exclusive, this guide will take a look at the PlayStation Trophies.

Tetris Effects Cheats FAQs

Many “Tetris Effect cheats” FAQs involve the Konami Code and how to unlock the 1984 Level. Since this guide has already discussed in detail how to achieve this, this section won’t spend much time on it. The first two questions will answer information about the Konami Code, and the rest will be about other concerns players have inquired about.

What is the secret code in Tetris Effect?

This FAQ refers to the Konami Code that can be used to unlock the 1984 Level. The classic Konami Code is: Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A, and start. The Konami Code is a universal cheat code that works in many Konami games and even appears in non-Konami games as a way to pay respect to this iconic moment in gaming history. The Konami Code was first usable in the game Gradius. The original Konami Code was created with Nintendo consoles in mind, so the final few buttons may be different depending on which console the player is on. For example, to unlock 1984 on PlayStation, players need to use: Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, circle, and X. The circle and X buttons replace the B and A buttons.

What is the code for the Tetris Effect on the Nintendo Switch?

Since the Nintendo Switch is a Nintendo console, the Konami Code will be unaffected by button changes, so it’ll be the original code: Up, up, down, down, left, right, left, right, B, A.

What is the ghost in Tetris?

The Tetris “Ghost Piece” refers to the outline of the Tetrimino as it will appear at the bottom of the screen once it’s in place. This allows players to have a better visual of where the piece is going and how it will fit in with the surrounding pieces. This wasn’t always a feature in Tetris, but since its creation, it’s become a popular standard feature for any Tetris game.

Is there a classic Tetris on Tetris Effect?

Yes, in addition to the 1984 unlockable level, the Tetris Effect: Connected version of the game features more classic Tetris-style modes. Since it’s part of the Connected version, these modes can also be used in multiplayer and competitive.

What is the Tetris Effect?

The title of the game, Tetris Effect, may sound familiar. That’s because The Tetris Effect (also known as Tetris Syndrom) is a term used for an effect that “occurs when something we focus on for extended periods starts appearing in our thoughts, perceptions, and dreams.” For Tetris players, this can mean they’re seeing Tetrimino blocks in their daily lives. They start thinking about how objects can shape around one another. Some players even have hypnagogic hallucinations about the blocks. The list of how the game continues to pop up in the player’s life even when they aren’t playing goes on and on. This doesn’t just happen because of Tetris. The Tetris Effect can impact all sorts of people for different reasons, but because Tetris is such a common example of the phenomenon, it was deemed the Tetris Effect. The game’s name was inspired by the research behind the Tetris Effect.
