Rockstar Muses On “GTA In Space”

Rockstar Muses On “GTA In Space”

The Grand Theft Auto series has always been grounded in contemporary society. Even Grand Theft Auto 2, which gave us a peek at the future, and the original game’s London expansion, which was set in the ‘60s, were simply reskins of the same ideas found in the original game. But Rockstar has shown that it can create games in other time periods, even other genres, such as Red Dead Redemption’s take on the Western. So, what about sci-fi?

Dan Houser has expressed interest in a futuristic Grand Theft Auto in the past, but he says, even now, that there’s one thing holding him back: the lack of a good idea. He’s pegged science fiction as a genre that is less about the technology on display—the laser guns and space ships that increase one’s lethality and freedom—and more about the human condition, which persists even among such technological advances.

He’s right, and the fact that he doesn’t want to make such a game until he has an inspired idea for it is both disappointing and heartening. Disappointing because a high-tech GTA game would be an interesting breath of fresh air, but heartening because Houser has the interest and wants to do it right.
