It looks like Far Cry 5 could be heading in a different direction and moving away from the usual exotic locales, opting instead for something set in the American West. YouTuber Silentc0re has pieced together a ton of decent-looking evidence suggesting the setting for Far Cry 5 is closer to home. Reddit user Thee_Batchy has compiled the evidence into a list of links as well. It all consists of interviews and surveys conducted by Ubisoft, information on live-action filming, and more.
It looks like Far Cry 5 is almost assuredly set in… Montana! Here’s the skinny. The director of the Far Cry Primal live-action trailer was spotted shooting for a “upcoming video game” in the state, as reported by local news outlets. Another local outlet shared a story about Ubisoft employees buying rounds of drinks and interviewing locals about the area. Finally, Ubisoft, known for openly asking about ideas in surveys, asked fans about a Western setting in a Far Cry survey.
Interestingly enough, Ubisoft was in headlines recently with a string of curious Far Cry 3 -related postings on various social media channels. Ubisoft PR later said that was simply “throwback” content.
Kotaku’s Jason Schreier corroborated the Montana setting on Twitter , while also discrediting various reports that Far Cry 5 will have a “Wild West” setting. To me, it seems like people saw “Western” and having Red Dead Redemption on the brain, went for that rather than considering a literal, geographic setting. Far Cry is generally a modern series, the exceptions being spin-offs like Far Cry Primal and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, so this could work.
