Sony recently released several high definition screenshots of the PS4 user interface that we saw in action at their event last week. We don’t have a ton of information about how the whole thing will actually work, but we can surmise several things.
The PS4 desktop looks like it operates much like an Xbox or Windows 8 desktop. There is no cross media bar, just a variety of windows that can be customized to your liking. However, these windows are arranged in a horizontal formation, much like the XMB was. By highlighting a game or program, you will be able to see how many friends own it, how many trophies you have, new feeds about the game, how many pieces of media you have shared, and what add ons you have downloaded. You’ll also see promotions from the game developers and popular content about the game in a drop down menu.
The profile screen holds no real surprises. You’ll have a customizable profile pic, a friends list, a list of recent activity, your trophy list, and more. It will also show others what game you are currently playing and what videos you have recently uploaded.
The share screen gives us the most new info. It contains controls for sharing content via a screenshot, video, or live broadcast. It also includes barebones editing tools which allow you to trim your video clips to the desired length.
The final few pictures were actually just mockups of what the Sony interface might look like on smart phones and tablets but they essentially show off the same things that all the other screenshots did. Of course, the ability to watch live streams on your phone is always fun. I’m sure there will be PS4 users who will look at their phone and suddenly run home just so they can get in on a streamed game of Madden.
