Square-Enix Returns to Their Roots with a New Chrono Trigger*

After deciding that they would no longer strive to satisfy a global market, instead returning to their JRPG roots, Square-Enix has announced that they would like to begin working on the Chrono Trigger franchise once more. This news comes by way of Square-Enix president Yosuke Matsuda in an interview with popular Japanese video game magazine Famitsu.

“We have always loved Chrono Trigger ,” Wada said, “however, we were unsure that the game still held appeal to the international audience. An epic time traveling fantasy adventure seems to be exactly the thing that American audiences avoid, but we are willing to at least give it another shot.

Wada went on to say that the new Chrono Trigger game will likely feature an entirely new cast of characters, keeping the original Chrono Trigger cast involved only as background characters. Combat will likely be real time, and will be partially based on the Final Fantasy XIII combat system. “We know that Chrono Trigger fans really liked the dual-tech system that allowed characters to combine their powers into bigger and more spectacular attacks. We have to integrate that into the battle system of the next Chrono Trigger . Selecting auto-battle will make the computer look at whose turns are almost up, and if characters almost have a full ATB, it will wait and use an appropriate dual or triple tech for you.”
