TGS 2011: New Square RPG Coming To 3DS

None

Amidst the many varied 3DS announcements at Nintendo’s conference last night was a strange game called Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. It’s an upcoming JRPG made by Square Enix, and it has us excited. Why? Because a general rule of thumb for JRPGs is that the worse the title, the better the game. And this title is pretty bad. Sure enough, what gameplay has been revealed so far has looked awesome, proving the rule once again.

Bravely Default takes place in a storybook-style universe, with environments that look like they are drawn on the screen. Sailing the seas seems to be a big part of the game, and there is even a traditional overworld map for people who pine for the JRPGs of old. Square also announced that the 3DS’s cameras and augmented reality capabilities would be a central part of gameplay as well. I don’t know how AR cards can fit into a JRPG mold, but this sure sounds like an interesting feature.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy is set to release sometime in 2012.
