The Complete List of The Walking Dead Games in Chronological & Release Order

The Walking Dead game series is a perfect blend of storytelling and horror. While the popular graphic novels became a television show in 2010, these games hit the scene in 2012. Developed by Telltale Games and acclaimed for its emotional depth, tough choices, and character-driven narrative, this episodic adventure game series immerses players into the world of the Walking Dead. Some characters from the comics appear in the games or are the central characters, but most games use different characters entirely.

Walking Dead Games Premise

Players navigate a treacherous landscape fraught with moral dilemmas and intense survival challenges. Unlike typical games with incredible action and complete freedom. These games are all about choices. Players will constantly face situations where they must put someone in danger while saving another character. The game will be stressful, but the storyline is so gripping that you’ll keep coming back for more.

The Walking Dead Games Chronological Order

The Walking Dead: Season One

The one that started it all. Players were thrust into the world of The Walking Dead, playing as Lee Everett, who quickly becomes the caretaker for Clementine. The game is filled with suspense, tough choices, and devastating gameplay. Considered the best in the series, prepare to be heartbroken.

This DLC focuses on five protagonists: Vince, Wyatt, Russell, Bonnie, and Shel. Each has its own short story relatively in the same geographical spot. The epilogue connects all five stories and bridges the gap between Season One and Season Two.

The Walking Dead: Season Two

The Walking Dead: Season Two follows on the first game, and coincides with events of the comic. Players now control Clementine, as she learns to navigate the difficult world of The Walking Dead.

The Walking Dead: Michonne

The title of the game explains exactly what this is about. Gamers will now play as Michonne as she makes an appearance from the main series, giving players a chance to play as a popular character. The storyline is set after she leaves Rick Grimes’ group in the comics.

New Frontier features two playable protagonists, Javier “Javi” Garcia and Clementine, and continues the gameplay of making difficult decisions in the world of The Walking Dead. Clementine continues her growth as a protagonist and must make heartbreaking decision over and over again.

The Walking Dead: The Final Season

Clementine may have finally found a home and person worth protecting, but can she make it last? The game puts the finishing touches on the Telltale series, sending Clementine out with a bang. Here’s how the developers described the final chapter, “Clementine, now a fierce and capable survivor, has reached the final chapter in her journey. After years on the road facing threats both living and dead, a secluded school might finally be her chance for a home. But protecting it will mean sacrifice. Clem must build a life and become a leader while still watching over AJ, an orphaned boy and the closest thing to family she has left. In this gripping and emotional final season, you will define your relationships, fight the undead, and determine how Clementine’s story ends.”

The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners

The VR games are made to be more visceral and chaotic. Unlike the Telltale games, these are action-packed. “Saints & Sinners is a game unlike any other in The Walking Dead universe. Every challenge you face, and decision you make is driven by YOU. Fight the undead, scavenge through the flooded ruins of New Orleans, and face gut-wrenching choices for you and the other survivors. Live The Walking Dead’s dark drama in your own skin.”

The Walking Dead: Onslaught

Completely different from the Telltale series, Onslaught brings the action from the Walking Dead series to your VR headset. “There’s no rest when survival is on the line. Step into AMC’s The Walking Dead and prepare for an onslaught of walkers as you assume the roles of your favorite characters from the show, and confront the horrors and humanity of this apocalyptic new world.”

The Walking Dead Games Release Order

The release order is pretty similar to the actual timeline in the game. While the game may shift focus to a different character or viewpoint, it eventually connects every narrative. It’s a perfect storytelling feature and one that keeps the audience hooked. The other Walking Dead games in the series are entirely different genres. They are connected only by the Walking Dead IP. Because the games were released separately or episodic, collections were released so players could play a connected story when the story was finished.
