Developed by Sony Computer Entertainment Japan with Sony legend Shuhei Yoshida producing, The Legend of Dragoon is the PlayStation’s first-party JRPG modeled after other successful games in the genre. While its biggest inspiration is most commonly recognized as being Final Fantasy VII, there are also elements of Super Mario RPG and other noteworthy role-playing games in The Legend of Dragoon‘s mechanics and combat. Like many other big-budget JRPGs of the era, The Legend of Dragoon mixes in-game dialogue and conversations with full-motion video cutscenes to deliver its story, with the title’s FMV elements helping it to gain plenty of notoriety ahead of its release (along with its gameplay being spread across 4 discs).
Releasing in Japan in 1999, the title would eventually make its way to the West just 6 months later in June 2000. Critical response to the game was somewhat mixed, with many reviewers unfavorably comparing the title to Square’s Final Fantasy games on the PS1, noting that The Legend of Dragoon didn’t quite meet the level of presentation established by its contemporaries Final Fantasy VII and VIII. Regardless, The Legend of Dragoon would go on to earn a fervent cult following, with many players praising the game for its more manageable difficulty, lack of grinding, and engaging combat system. After years of PS1 exclusivity, the title was released on the PSN and became available on PS4 and PS5 consoles in 2023, quickly becoming the number one game on the service.
The Legend of Dragoon Premise
The story of Legend of Dragoon quickly introduces players to the game’s world and our hero, Dart, as he contemplates his current surroundings while resting in a forest. Nearby, a mysterious military force is laying siege to a peaceful village while just outside the forest a dragon rampages. Dart is almost killed by the dragon but rescued by Rose, who quickly discovers he harbors some secret power. After learning that the village being attacked is his hometown, Dart heads back and begins his adventure proper, rescuing his friends and discovering his hidden powers as a Dragoon. His adventure takes him across the world to meet new allies, lose loved ones, reconnect with his father, and prevent the elimination of all life by a megalomaniacal villain.
In terms of its gameplay, The Legend of Dragoon is very similar to other JRPGs of the era. Players will divide their time in the game between three modalities — navigating a world map, entering towns and dungeons, and engaging in turn-based battles with menu commands. Notably, Legend of Dragoon‘s combat mixes elements of real-time button presses and fighting game-style combos, resulting in an engaging system the game refers to as “Additions”. As characters level up, both their base stats and their Additions increase, eventually dealing substantial damage to enemies. A key component to the game’s plot and its combat are the Dragoon transformations, which see characters transform into powerful dragon warriors.
The Legend of Dragoon Main Characters
The world of Legend of Dragoon, referred to as “Endiness” in the game, is a world of strict social stratification. While humans are generally peaceful and humble farmers, there are those who wish to see their place elevated, resulting in conflict between human settlements. Outside this conflict are the races of Dragons and the hybrid-like Winglies. Past conflict between the humans and the Winglies stems from their enslavement of humans several millennia before the beginning of Legend of Dragoon‘s story, with players thrust into a world rife with conflict and turmoil as a lone mercenary. Main characters in The Legend of Dragoon include:
Heroes
- Dart: The main character and hero of The Legend of Dragoon. Dart is a mercenary who discovers he has the ability to transform into a Dragoon — a powerful dragon warrior.
- Lavitz: Lavitz is a noble knight and one of Dart’s first allies. He helps Dart rescue Shana at the game’s outset.
- Shana: Shana is Dart’s childhood friend and his principal love interest in the game. She unknowingly harbors a dark secret tied to the game’s conflict.
- Rose: Rose is a powerful Dragoon warrior who rescues Dart and helps train him to wield his Dragoon abilities.
- Albert: Albert is a prince of a kingdom within Endiness and joins the party after Lloyd kidnaps his father.
Villains
- Lloyd: Lloyd is an adversary of the party tracking down three artifacts, including the precious Moon Gem held by King Albert.
- Virage: Virage, otherwise known as the God of Destruction, is an entity that came to Endiness during the Winglies’ reign, resulting in the Winglies using magic to separate his soul from his body. The Soul of Destruction now travels the world in search of a host to reclaim his body and end all life on the planet.
- Melbu Frahma: Melbu Frahma is the principal antagonist of The Legend of Dragoon and the leader of the Winglies. He hopes to use the Soul of Destruction to destroy all other species on the planet.
Other Noteworthy PlayStation JRPGs
While The Legend of Dragoon often gets unfairly compared to the likes of Final Fantasy VII and the more contemporary Final Fantasy VIII (which was released on the PS1 the same year), those who have played it know that Legend of Dragoon brings plenty of unique and novel ideas to the table to stand as one of the console’s many great JRPGs. Like the SNES for the 4th generation of home consoles, the PlayStation is home to a litany of noteworthy JRPG titles that stand as classics in the genre. In addition to one excellent game after another from Square Enix, several other developers produced both critically and commercially successful role-playing games on the console. The Legend of Dragoon Cheats & Secrets
While there are no official cheats for The Legend of Dragoon, players can use several helpful secrets to make their time with the game easier. Additionally, players have the option of using Game Shark codes to enhance The Legend of Dragoon. These codes are compatible with physical versions of the game on native hardware and a PlayStation emulator, but not with the digital version of the game available through PSN.
The Legend of Dragoon Secrets
Final Addition
Additions are the combo abilities each character in The Legend of Dragoon unlocks at specific levels. To get the final addition for all characters (except Miranda and Shana), you must master the previous Additions. You will unlock each character’s 7-hit master combo this way. Miranda and Shana do not unlock Additions but do gain more SP with each attack from leveling up. Other characters’ final Additions will generate over 100 SP and deal over 400% damage.
Easy Mastering of Additions
To quickly master Additions and unlock each character’s final Addition, head to the Forest near Seles. In the area where the Merchant set up shop (with small rabbit-like creatures), run around to trigger random encounters. The battles here are frequent and easy, allowing for quick mastery of Additions.
Easy Experience
While on the Phantom Ship, run into the blue flames and fight them. These enemies are fairly weak and reward a decent amount of experience, making it a great place to camp out and grind these encounters over and over for easy experience gains.
Ultimate Wargod Location
Players can head to Lohan to purchase the Ultimate Wargod. This accessory makes Additions trigger perfectly every time. The Ultimate Wargod can be purchased for 10,000G, which is steep, but it’s ultimately worth it. This accessory makes battles much easier and your Dragoons will still level up.
Free Healing
Players with negative status effects will normally need a Mind or Body Purifier item to remove the effect. The following trick allows you to heal without having a Mind or Body Purifier in stock. Once you reach the point in the game where you have Dragoon Spirits, turn Dragoon to remove any negative status effect.
Temple Traps
Near the end of Disc 1, players will need to search for the Dragoni plant to save Shana. Inside the temple where the plant lies are several traps set to delay your progress. The first is a number lock, the combination of which is 352. Later, you will come across two statues that must be turned in the correct direction to allow you to reach the top of the stairs. These statues are gold and stone. Leave the gold statue facing toward the front and turn the stone statue to the left. After, you can run up the stairs to find help for Shana.
Free Water Bottle
You will need to save Shana again after reaching the end of the town of Lohan. To save her, you will need to locate a bottle that can hold water. After speaking with Dabas, head down the stairs to reach the ground level of the town. A merchant will get your attention as soon as you arrive. He has a bottle for sale but wants to sell it for an exorbitant price. Keep telling him to take down the price and he will eventually offer it for 100g. Select the second dialogue choice (“…”) and the merchant will give you the bottle for free.
Dragoon Stone Locations
Dart
You start with his stone at the beginning of the game but cannot use it until you defeat Kongol at the Battle of Hoax.
Lavitz/Albert
To get the Lavitz Dragoon stone, you have to defeat the Green Tusked Dragon and the man who turns into the Jade Dragoon. Albert will then inherit the Lavitz Dragoon stone at the end of Disc 1.
Shana/Miranda
You will get Shana’s Dragoon stone after reaching the temple and defeating the Bandit. After, correctly answering the questions that the ghost asks you will reward the stone. Miranda will inherit Shana’s Dragoon stone on Disc 3.
Rose
After defeating Kongol at the Battle of Hoax you will get Rose as a playable character. She will have her Dragoon stone by default.
Haschel
You will get Haschel’s Dragoon stone after defeating Emperor Doyle at the end of Disc 1.
Meru
You will get Meru’s Dragoon stone after defeating the Blue Sea Dragon and Lenus.
Kongol
After you get Kongol, go back to the City of Lohan and walk to where the man who sold you the bottle is located. You will automatically walk up to him. After talking he will sell Kongol’s Dragoon stone for 1,000G.
The Legend of Dragoon Boss Strategies
Defeating Windigo
Players can easily defeat Windigo in a single turn by using a Sachet on its heart. You’ll acquire two Sachets during the second visit to Hellena Prison. Just hang onto one for the fight with Windigo to get an easy victory.
Defeating S. Virage
To easily defeat S. Virage, players just need to keep their HP up and let it use up its 10 lives. The one caveat is to make sure that all characters have high HP reserves before S. Virage’s final attack. This attack is capable of wiping out the party if you don’t regularly heal throughout the fight.
Defeating the Dead Captain and the 4 Dead Knights
Near the end of the Phantom Ship, you will have to defeat the Dead Captain of the ship and his 4 Dead Knights. However, this is easier said than done. Killing one of the Knights results in them resurrecting after a certain amount of time has passed. To circumvent their resurrections, get all of the Knights and the Captain to a red health meter. Once all enemies’ HP is low, use either Dart’s Explosion ability or Kongol’s Grand Stream and Meteor Strike magic abilities. Also, if you have any of your Dragoon Spirts to level 5, you can use their Dragon ability to wipe out all enemies in one fell swoop.
Defeating the Second Virage Boss
You will have to fight a stronger Viarge Boss in the Gravity Breakdown Valley. Take out his left hand (the hand on the right side of the screen) first and he will not be able to use his attack causing instant death until it regenerates. After taking out his left hand, concentrate on his head. If his hand comes back, destroy it again. You will win the battle after doing 1,600 damage to his head. Here is a list of how much health each part has:
- Head: 1600 HP
- Body: 600 HP
- Left Arm: 320 HP
- Right Arm: 320 HP

The Legend of Dragoon Cheat FAQs
What is the max level in The Legend of Dragoon?
Unlike most JRPGs of the era, which typically abide by the traditional max of level 99, The Legend of Dragoon‘s level cap is 60. In fact, the game actively discourages players from trying to progress beyond level 60, as the required experience is 999,999 for every subsequent level. While it is possible to reach level 99, it requires either persistent (and ultimately pointless) grinding or a Game Shark code modifying experience gains.
Is The Legend of Dragoon a grindy JRPG?
In comparison to other games of the era, The Legend of Dragoon actually doesn’t require much grinding at all. The game’s difficulty is fairly forgiving and characters level up at a decent rate, meaning it’s more likely for players to be overpowered rather than under-leveled. There is even an entire subset of Legend of Dragoon fans who use codes to lower their characters’ levels for a greater challenge. That said, it is possible to stick around in certain sections of the game to quickly gain a few levels and have a distinct advantage over subsequent enemies and bosses, even though it’s not really necessary.
Who is the fastest character in The Legend of Dragoon?
Each of the characters in The Legend of Dragoon has different base stats that dictate their specialty in combat. When it comes to the fastest character in Legend of Dragoon, it is Meru by a long shot. In general, male characters in The Legend of Dragoon are slower than female characters, but Meru is faster than the next fastest (Shana/Miranda) by 5 stat points.
How long to beat The Legend of Dragoon?
Compared to other PS1-era RPGs, The Legend of Dragoon is a fairly brisk experience. Most players will beat the main story in roughly 40-50 hours. Fully completing the game (including all side content and maxing out each character) will take players about 65 hours, on average.
